Project Summary
« Think global, act local ». This could summerise the project in a few words. Through the local experiences of the 3 partners; a Finish primary school, a French primary school and a French secondary school, how can we encourage pupils to think about and take action to achieve a more global management of the environment?
This partnership between the French and Finnish primary schools comes from the educational teams’ wish to introduce a wider dimension to the teaching of sustainable development. They have since been joined by a French secondary school who are equally enthusiastic to be part of the project. The project is centered on achieving sustainable development, however it also touches many other aspects of the curriculum, such as; language and culture studies, geography, social norms and world solidarity. It is by thinking and acting together that we can hope to make sustainable changes with the students. This is why different movements within the project will include activities to encourage teamwork and to also work with the support of local associations.
The comparison of different living environments, for both the teachers and the pupils, and the actions already undertaken by one or another, will be the subject of reflection to improve the education of sustainable environments and to question current practices.
Action plans and case studies will be explained and compared amongst the participants to develop critical thinking and a wider sense of citizenship. This may concern for example, freshwater management, waste management, the protection of biodiversity, out-of-classroom education, energy management in schools, and other social subjects such as consumerism and citizenship.
Mobilities and exchanges will allow us to experience other cultures. It will also push us to express ourselves in a language other than our mother tongue and so will be a learning experience for us all.
The work done will be shared amongst as many people as possible, through exhibitions and various digital tools and will be mediatised during events and meetings that will take place alongside the project.
School inclusivity, such as that successfully practiced in Finland, will be an important focal point of the project, with the French schools hoping to adopt practices that will make their schools more inclusive, allowing the greatest number of pupils to achieve good results and to discourage pupils from leaving school early.
The participation of the French secondary school will also help to ensure that the teams stay connected by creating a sense of consistency and continuity between the different cycles of the French educational institutions.
The pandemic situation currently affecting the world at the time of writing this summary of the project, reinforces the need for global solidarity across all fields. This solidarity can only be achieved through intercultural education of the young.
