Project Summary

There is a wide range of alternative futures available, depending on our current choices and actions. The ever changing future and uncertainties are a likely cause of stress and insecurity. As a consequence, it is of vital importance to tackle these challenges and prepare the students and teachers for playing an active part in shaping this future. Our project focussing on future literacy will help to prepare students to develop their future skills and improve their ability to imagine alternative futures to have the ability to take control over the future as well as participating in discussions about the future.
The project as such is divided in two parts. During the first year we like make teachers and students aware of what our future should or could be. The leading question will be: “What will the future bring?” On the one hand students deal with values and actions that determine our future. For that we use different methods. To ensure a liveable future all activities are not reduced to high technology but also have to involve sustainability. “Megatrend cards” stimulate students to judge habits and developments which could be observed at the moment. This method leads students to think about these trends and their consequences (good or bad). An other method is the TED talk which brings students to explain themselves and learn methods of how to be heard. As a subject for the TED talk we choose the “sustainable development goals” from the United Nations. These goals must be achieved for a positive future and we think that students must be forced to think about them. Excursions and workshops during the meetings underline this efforts, as there a several activities (like: visit of dSPACE, robotic workshop) who will show students and teachers the possible world of the 21st century.
The Circular Economy and Entrepreneurship Game leads to the second year of our project, where we want to focus on the personal development of students and teachers. The leading question will be: “Am I prepared for the future?” The students think about the economy at various levels: consumers, companies and society. The goal is to prevent natural resources from becoming waste after being used in short-lived products. This is achieved by creating business activity and a society based on a continuous cycle. At the same time, the circular economy reinvigorates old, familiar and sensible operating models, such as durable and high-quality products as well as proper maintenance and repairs. After the game the students will be prepared for the bigger task. They will act as young entrepreneurs. During about half a year they have to plan an own enterprise including all tasks such as market reseach/survey, advertising, personnel management/recruitment, financing/negotiation and public relations. The focus will lie on future technology including corporate citizenship and entrepreneurial responsibility for the environment. The students will also train their competences by the methods of the circular classroom. They will make interviews with existing enterprises, work out good ideas and collect them to serve as example for their own enterprise. Also they have to find out what is important for employers when they are looking for employees. As there might be differences between the countries we will make a liste of do’s and don’ts for job application including tipps for the different countries if we discover important differences.
After working out this list and planing an own enterprise the students will be prepared for their last task. During the last project meeting students will do a job application in a role play. On the one hand they will act as employer of their enterprise and choose job candidates for their enterprise during a job application interview. On the other hand they will act as employees and write a job application in English (including CV, photo, e-Portfolio) and do a job interview.
The best candidate will be honored by the title of “FLOW’s top job candidate”. A brain training they will be prepared for acting spontaneously and deliberately.
In this last period of the project a future day will be organized at each school. The students should point out good or bad examples for a livable future. They can use the ideas and results they got during the project, but they also feel free to add somethings on their own. During the future day an exposition of photocollage or stories, paintings and statements of “How I imagine our/my future” will be presented.
Throughout the whole project teachers will accompany students on their way to the future. They also get to know all the requirements of the job market to prepare students and answer questions. But also teachers need to be prepared for the future in the classroom particularly for media literacy. During the third project meeting the teachers will have a teacher training and also teachers teach others in new technology and methods proven in the different countries.
