Project Summary
The project. EVROPI – Exchanges, Values, Respect, Olympism, Sharing and Implication – was built by 6 French and Greek institutions, colleges and primary schools and aims at changing the way young people look at Europe so that they can build a common European citizenship.
Because Normandy is hosting the 18th School Olympic Games in 2022, it seemed interesting for all partners to draw on local resources and commonalities (Normandy, Land of the Olympics, Athens, cradle of Olympism) to Unite students around motivating activities that will allow them to discover each other’s cultural and historical heritage while working more specifically on the values of Olympism.
The Franco-Greek teams agreed on the following objectives:
– introducing students to the culture of a European partner by identifying what is common to partners and sharing what is different and developing in pupils a sense of belonging to the same Europe
–working on the history of Olympism, the construction of democracy and citizenship based on the history of Athens
– developing the key skills of students by promoting tutoring between college students
– giving students a mobility experience while including students with disabilities and students in precarious social situations.
159 pupils from 8 to 13 years old, French and Greek, some from disadvantaged rural areas and for some other from more privileged urban areas, as well as 19 educational staff, will work together for two years. Activities on the e-twinning space of the project (creation of a logo for the project, knowledge of oneself and the other, quizzes and questionnaires to identify misrepresentations, exchanges around the mobility program, mirror work on the history of the Olympic Games, video debate conference on the values of sport) will serve to create an emulation around the project and the first links between very different students.
The inter-degree mobility (primary and college) in France and Greece will allow students to build a benevolent link between the youngest and the oldest students who will be the” guardians “of the youngest pupils and will allow them to live their first mobility by being accompanied. The activities planned during the mobility will be organized by the students themselves for their peers to put them at the heart of the project and teach them to take initiatives in a collective of work. Thanks to visits to symbolic places in Athens (Acropolis, Parliament, Panathenea stadium…) and Normandy (Mont Saint Michel, Landing Beaches) with audio guides made by the students themselves and which will be the subject of a report for WEB TV,participants will have a better understanding of a common history. The activities related to the Olympic Games will be highlights that young French and Greek will live together (French-Greek Olympiads, and thus will strengthen the friendship between the participants.
This project is expected to develop strong humanist values among students (openness to others, respect for differences, solidarity and mutual aid, a sense of collective, a sense of belonging to the same community), key transferable skills in learning (observe, analyze, share, debate, cooperate, use digital communication tools) and knowledge (culture and civilization of another country, shared history) that will enable them to become European citizens.
Most students have never travelled: this first mobility experience will be crucial in building a school and personal path open to the world. Participation in the project of students with disabilities and students in precarious situations will place inclusion at the heart of the school’s practices.
the joint work of primary school and secondary school teachers in Greece and France will ultimately also enable the school-college links necessary for the fluidity of pupils’ school career . Finally, this project is expected to initiate a real policy of opening up the 6 establishments internationally, 4 of which will live their first European project. The acquisition of an international project approach and European management, the links forged between the partners will be facilitators for the development of new projects open to other European partners.
