Project Summary

We are a technical school with two branches, a vocational and tertiary school on the one hand and a technology school on the other. In both structures, we have a rather limited number of pupils studying German. For the most part, they come from a difficult socio-cultural background and we admit that their linguistic level is not very high, as they personnally also have social, scolar and cultural diffculties. With this exchange, it is our intention to motivate them to continue to study German and show more interest in foreign languages and eventually in order to help them gain autonomy and self-esteem to avoid them failure at school and to avoid that they miss classes, this is indeed a problem that we have to face at our school.

Our partner school is a comprehensive school in which most pupils come from rather wealthy families, and this school includes a class that encourages a social mix of origines. This school (Oberschule Jesteburg) is planning to offer classes including A-levels in the future.

During the exchange that took place as well in France as in Germany, the partners always took part together in all the activities. It is a group of 30 pupils accompanied by 4 teachers (two from Germany and two from France). We always include some time spent in the partner school accompanying regular lessons and time to prepare the day of a major event i.e. the organisation of a dinner with the families and performances in the evening, cultural as well as sport activities.

During the rest of the year, the project continues with the linguistic and pedagogical preparations. Indeed, the subject we have chosen requires some time for the reading and writing of the pupils contributions in order to prepare the theatrical performance and the dinner served afterwards for the participants, their families and school staff.

The pupils can reinvest their experience for their exams. At the vocational and tertiary school, they have to choose subjects on their own, and the trip to Germany is one of their favorite subjects. At the technology school, space and exchange is one of the topics they have to be familiar with for all their final exams.

In addition to this, all pupils can show their positive experience at the open day or during the so-called franco-german day.
