Project Summary
We are living days of uncertainty for our environment. Concepts like sustainability and responsible consumerism have become a priority for some, but not yet for a vast majority of the population. In a world pushed by pollution and environmental issues, we need our new generations to step forward to improve the prospects for a better future in their societies and the environment. One of the biggest environmental and social issues that should concern us all is the massive and irresponsible use of plastic we make. Tons of plastic products are produced everyday to be used and discarded after a very short time. A short time of use, but an eternity among us, as a great part of the plastic used will not be recycled and will end up dumped into nature. Nature is not capable to absorb or decompose plastic and becomes an issue that affects both fauna and flora, and, as a consequence, those at the top of the food chain, human beings, who indirectly end up eating the very same plastic they once produced and dumped.
Plastic Fantastic? How to raise awareness on plastic use and promote environmental responsibility is a project developed by three European schools: Realschule from Steinhagen, Germany, RSG Tromp Meesters from Steenwijk, the Netherlands, and Escola Pàlcam from Barcelona, Spain. This project was born as an opportunity to promote a positive change in the attitudes, perception and behavior of our students in the use of plastic. Our students will be learning about the whole process of plastic production, recycling and the negative effects of plastic abuse in our society, as pollution, plastic patches or microplastics issues. They will also be investigating on alternatives to plastic use in order to build a better future. We want our students to be environmentally responsible and to become change promotors within their own circles.
We believe we can only achieve those objectives if we empower our students by putting them at the center of the learning process. In order to do that, we will be following a combination of PBL, Problem-Based Learning, and cooperative work methodologies. All the project activities will be set as problems to be solved by the students, who, with the use of new technologies, will be doing research, cooperating and negotiating in international groups as they look for possible solutions to those problems. All the products of this project will be shared with Creative Commons licenses so anyone can benefit from all those activities of our project. We expect this project to have an impact on all its participants at many levels. They will be given the necessary tools to improve their understanding of the whole process of plastic production, to become more aware of the issues caused by it, such as pollution and fauna destruction, and to be able to improve their own attitudes and relationship with it, as they strive to become committed members of their societies and develop a responsible civic engagement in their cities, their countries and within the whole EU.
