Project Summary

Gymnazium Jihlava and Cygnus Gymnasium have been successfully cooperating for more than 6 years. Both schools decided to develop a new international exchange project to focus on inquiry-based- science education to give students an opportunity to experience field work and work on the research tasks independently with the help of teachers or specialists.
The project has been designed with an important message in mind: ‘How do we reduce our environmental footprint and teach other people to do so?’
Just as the whole world around us, even our immediate surroundings suffer from bad human actions. If only people took responsibility for what happens in and around their household, it would have an instant effect on how we live. Considering all this, we aim to create situations in which our students open their minds to changes and learn to spread the word and teach others.
23 pairs of Czech and Dutch students / aged 14-17 / will be confronted with a number of tasks that deal with the protection of the environment and the fact that we need to learn to tap into renewable resources more and more. As we plan to do a great deal of practical activities, the students will, for instance, measure water and electricity consumption in their household and suggest ways of how to reduce it. To make them realize that cutting down on general household waste does make a difference, they will calculate the amount of waste they produce and how they sort it out efficiently to pollute as little as possible. The measurement of CO2 and temperature in their classrooms in relation to airing the rooms enough to study in a healthy environment will certainly pose interesting questions and produce a lot of suggestions of what we need to do to help it. The final comparisons between the two countries and solutions to the issues will play an essential part of the project.
The students will not only collect all the data in their diaries but they will also have to present them to their peers and parents and other people from the public. So the project will definitely be challenging from the language and social interaction point of view. Other results of the project will be: Twinspace, project webpage, videos from short-term exchanges of pupils or posters.
Making all our findings and their analyses public and showing that we care about our environment will surely raise awareness of the fact that even us individuals can make a difference if we set a good example and send the message forward.
