Project Summary

Together with 30 young people from Germany, Sweden and other states of the Baltic rim, we want to organize a campaign with the topics of climate change and climate justice. With regard to the contents emphasis will be put on the main producers of greenhouse gases, i.e. “coal/lignite”, “gas” and “global industrial agriculture” as well as on alternative concepts.

Preparations for this project have already started. The first transnational preparation and getting to know meeting is planned at the beginning of June in Malmö. The most important part of this campaign will be a two week sailing turn on-board of the educational sailing vessel “Lovis”. It will start on 31.08.2019 in Lübeck, Germany and will finish in Malmö, Sweden. The sailing trip will provide the framework for an topic based exchange of knowledge, opinions, best practice examples and experiences from the respective countries. We also want to shed light on the situation in further European states and collectively get to know European projects concerning climate protection, as, for example the implementation of the Paris climate agreement. During the trip several intermediate stops are planned along the German, Danish and Swedish coast, during which we will meet with local climate activists and learn about their struggles and projects.

Using creative methods of presentations, like for example street theater, we want to create an active public discussion about the causes of the current climate crisis, the resulting challenges for overcoming this crisis as well as concepts for an environment and climate friendly society.

Throughout the preparation phase and during the trip – on board on the “LOVIS” as well as during at meetings with people living at harbors along the route, there will be plenty of space for encounters and exchanges between differing cultures and perspectives. We will bring with us a portable exhibition, our international library to the topics of this campaign as well as a repertoire of action ideas and material, in order to bring the subject matter to the public. By doing so, we want to sensitize citizens and motivate them to a more climate friendly way of living.

During the campaign we want to create a booklet with the title “Practices for Climate justice in Europe”, which can already be used during the sailing trip itself, but also later in our respective local contexts. Another focus will be put on the many new contacts created during the journey and on the idea of youth-participation, which offer a future framework to actively work on shaping politics and to critically analyzing complex topics like climate change.
