Project Summary
CONTEXT of the Project:
We consolidate that nobody should be shamed or feel inferior because of their differences. On the basis of the current migration and refugee movements in Europe, it became clear that most schools had not current concepts for intercultural education. The newcomers from other cultures were completely unprepared, met students whose intercultural competence was scarce and saw no possibility to be involved in the school community.Frustration, school refusal was the result and sometimes the school climate was severely impaired.
The project wants to encourage every student to express himself, his thoughts by giving everyone equal chances and overcome not straightforward racism but ignorant stereotyping. There will be an occasion to understand different identities, be tolerant and to recognize the wide range of cultures that can cohabit.
Discovering diversity will enrich everyone’s education and play an essential part in understanding and accepting each other.
We want to achieve the reduction of prejudices, the awareness of one’s own cultural identity, the integration of children from other cultures into a new school environment and to teach local students the culture of their classmates without prejudice.
We aim also to raise our awareness of our own cultural identity, to bring together the common European cultural values as a basis for our coexistence, to feel culture as an enrichment of one’s own life and to improve existing intercultural teaching modules through innovative teaching modules on the basis of different teaching subjects of our curriculum for intercultural education. The 5 participating schools want to involve as many people as possible and also social organizations such as refugee initiatives, NGOs, cultural, political and religious representatives. It’s necessary to individuate how intercultural learning can be linked to different basic teaching subjects and focus on openness, empathy, respect for the fellow-pupils culture and the awareness of one’s own cultural roots.
The activities focus on:
– Language and literature
– Music and dance
– Arts
– Interreligious dialogue
– Politics and history.
We want to develop solid building blocks for intercultural education in all relevant disciplines in order to bring students from other cultures into our school community giving them the opportunity to contribute to the school life with their cultural background. Likewise, we want to develop teaching modules to help the integration of newcomers who will grow into our own cultural environments and raise the awareness of the cultural identity of the new classmates.
