Project Summary
According to the 2nd article of the Treaty of the European Union, these are the European common values: human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for Human Rights, including the rights of persons belonging to minorities. In the same way, these will be the values our project is going to be based on, in addition to the values of empathy, solidarity, honesty, tolerance, integrity, dignity, equity, bravery and confidence. The fact that the project is going to be carried out by four European countries located in different geographical spots of Europe gives it a widespread European dimension and allows participants (students, teachers and local community) to get to know about how migrant inclusion is dealt with at European level as well as at national level. The four school communities participating in “Food for Thought: a European Recipe Book for Migrant Inclusion” will benefit from its outcomes fostering a more inclusive education in their respective institutions.
Our project distinguishes the following objectives:
1.To foster a more inclusive education by reflecting on different concepts connected with the migrant community so that they can understand them better and make them feel more at home.
2.To consider an intercultural education by thinking of actions that can help in the inclusion of migrant students for the creation of a more cohesive society.
3.To promote common values at all levels of education paying attention to the migrant community’s holistic needs so that they can develop both socially and emotionally.
By compiling our recipe book, we will try to create some awareness of the difficulties that migrants have to endure. Furthermore, our students will understand the migrant issue better and will be able to do some critical thinking and thus facilitate the inclusion of their migrant mates and their corresponding families. As the project goes on, our Recipe Book will be fed with recipes from different cultures, getting that intercultural touch and each recipe will at the same time be accompanied by the “Did you know…” section, in which students will have to do some research about important topics (Human Rights, causes,…) connected with the migrant issue. In the “Creativity and Art” section they will be able to develop their creative skills working on different values. The “Glossary Corner” will enrich their knowledge about other cultures, by being able to learn and produce some basic phrases in the languages involved in the project. The fact that the Recipe Book is going to be compiled using Lucidpress, allows us to share all the input and see what others are doing in their corresponding countries. The idea is to get a menu (starter, main course, second course and dessert) every term. A multicultural menu 100% which will make all the participants involved in the project be eager to see what the others have done.
At the end of each term an intercultural party will be organised and preparations will be made in advance in the schools to get the right atmosphere. Students’ relatives will be invited and everybody will learn from each other.
The activities done during the exchanges will also contribute to the achievement of our objectives. Apart from the gastronomical outings it is worth mentioning the “Round Table” that will take place at a local official institution (Town Hall). Here, the participants will have the opportunity to have a debate about migrant inclusion and exchange the information gathered so far. In addition, the short-term exchanges will finish with a “Master Chef” competition, in which participants will be given some ingredients which correspond to the different values they have been working on; they will then have to create a recipe for living together, using the ingredient-values given.
The project will be carried out by the following groups of participants:
1.Pupils of years 10-12.
2.Migrants’ and non migrants’ families.
3.Teachers of different subjects who teach the students involved plus any other teachers of the centre who might have interest in taking part in the project.
4.ICT teachers.
5.Representatives of the Social Services of the Town Hall.
6.Members of Youth Clubs or gastronomic clubs.
The use of eTwinning and School Education Gateway will enable us to carry out the project as thoroughly as possible. TwinSpace will allow our students to get to know each other and work in a cooperative way in the developing of their competences, communicative and ICT skills and teachers participating in the project will be able to prepare for their mobilities, implementing their participation, carrying out a good dissemination of the results obtained and improving their competences in a European context.
The exchange of information and application of migration concepts and values learnt, will make participants more critical of themsvelves and consequently they will develop a feeling of citenzenship, cultural awareness and open mindness.
