Project Summary

Art and mathematics don’t seem like a good fit at first sight. Usually these are 2 different subjects at school. But in reality you can find mathematics everywhere around you. We notice a deterioration of maths and a demotivation learning maths skills in our schools. With this project we get the chance to use a new approach of teaching maths that is more hands on and has a practical application. Teachers will also improve their teaching skills thanks to online courses, exchange of experiences with other teachers and the challenge of teaching maths in a new perspective.
We focus on different art forms to implement mathematics. Each art form gives the opportunity to include maths in a different way and will address different students and teachers. The focus is on visual arts, performing arts, literature and applied arts. Including technology expands the possibilities to include maths and add a new perspective of creating arts. We are all teachers in primary schools and the age group we are working with is from 6-12 year old.
This project is also a great way to discover and exchange cultural differences and similarities concerning learning, teaching and using maths in Europe. Thanks to eTwinning and student mobility, children see their peers, materials and skills used abroad and are motivated to take part in the project, using the math and improve their language skills.
The project “Maths, Art and Technology in Harmony” is a 24 month project and the coordinating school is the Vrije Basisschool Christus Koning in Belgium.
The partner schools are: Sincan Akşemsettin ilkokulu – Turkey, Tildy Zoltán Általános Iskola és Alapfokú Művészeti Iskola – Hungary, Agrupamento de Escolas de Moure e Ribeira do Neiva – Portugal, Vilniaus Barboros Radvilaites progimnazija- Lithuania and OS Vransko-Tabor Vransko 23 3305 Vransko – Slovenia.
Each country uses their expertise to contribute to the project. During the meetings, the receiving country provide the partners with workshops, lectures, demonstrations, … to share their expertise. This will be used to develop activities fit for the topic of the coming period.

This is the schedule we follow:
SEPTEMBER 2019: Starting preparation. Introduction of the project at school. Starting the website, designing a logo.
NOVEMBER 2019: Learning Teaching Training Activity in Belgium. Topic: Maths and Technology.
DECEMBER 2019: start using eTwinning.
MARCH 2020: Learning Teaching Training Activity in Portugal. Topic: Maths and Visual Arts.
MAY 2020: Learning Teaching Training Activity in Lithuania. Topic: Maths and Performing Arts.

OCTOBER 2020: Learning Teaching Training Activity in Slovenia. Topic: Maths and Literature.
FEBRUARY 2021: Learning Teaching Training Activity in Hungary. Topic: Maths and Applied Arts.
MAY 2021: Learning Teaching Training Activity in Turkey. Topic: Assessment strategies for mathematics.
JUNE 2021: Dissemination

We will do all activities at the same time between every 2 meetings. These activities will use the art forms we chose for that period. We aim at a broad variety of activities such as creating a book, making your own artwork, making your own instrument, coordinating a play or musical, performing a dance, creating a magic show, … The results of the activities will be shared on our website, on eTwinning, parents and local community can come visit an exhibition we made or watch a show we created.
During each meeting we will present and evaluate the former topic and help each other creating activities for the new topic. There are 6 LTT activities, only teachers attend the first and last meeting. Mostly 4 students and 2 teachers from each school attend the 4 other LTT activities. These students are hosted in families.
With this project we hope to improve the maths skills of our students, motivate teachers to find new methods teaching mathematics. We will learn new innovative curricula and educational methods. Students (and teachers) will work together, get to know the advantages of ICT, learn about other European countries and cultures, share experiences and communicate about it and they will be encouraged to be creative and using maths creating art.
