Project Summary

One of the objectives of this project will be to alert everybody to what unites us as European citizens, with a common geographical aspect: the Mediterranean.
It is the largest inland sea on the planet joining three continents, Europe, Africa and Asia.
But the Mediterranean is not just a geography, a climate or a sea, it is a cultural space, a confluence of very ancient civilizations that have bequeathed us particular forms of community life and diverse cultural heritage. It is a particular way of seeing, of thinking and of acting that has influenced the whole planet. Civilizations like the Greek gave rise to democracy. The Romans unified all the banks of this sea and called it “Mare Nostrum”, where commerce was made, and they exchanged information culture and knowledge. The Latin languages originated Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, French and Romanian today. Coveted by neighboring peoples, Europe was invaded several times. In this space the three great monotheistic religions were born: Judaism, Christianity and Islamism.
The Mediterranean cities have an urban structure highlighting the importance of their ports and the presence of large markets, like the city of Barcelona and the Italian cities have been reborn. The Renaissance bloomed in the fifteenth century. In Portugal emerged the discoveries and the Portuguese arrived to India by sea. In the nineteenth century European colonies skirted the Mediterranean in North Africa or the Middle East. In the twentieth century, after the World Wars on the shores of this sea was born the European Union. Here no country may have among its laws the death penalty or torture. Education and health are citizens’ rights. Workers exercise their rights.
The environment is currently one of the Mediterranean concerns where one tries to preserve water, land and forests. It is essential for us to bet on sustainable acts of protecting this unique environment so badly treated with so many cruises, and ships, and boats…going back and forth with no care for the marine life or environment.
Another concern of Europeans is security. Cities like Barcelona have already suffered from terrorism and violence. Europe is for many people the land of opportunities and the Mediterranean the bridge to safe land. The exodus to the European continent became a movement impossible to ignore and to stop. It will serve our action in the educational community in the various countries of the European Union so that we do not forget fundamental principles such as freedom, equality and fraternity. It will be in the chairs of the school, in the transmission of values among generations that the goal will be achieved, we hope in the long term.
The emphasis should continue to focus on education for Human Rights. It is the responsibility of the school to help young people to understand the values of unity, tolerance and respect for it is essential to have transnational projects and this is why the objectives of this project are: to consolidate by promotion the cultural and unique parameters of each country, social cohesion, active citizenship, intercultural dialogue and fulfillment of children; to be aware of the roots of their own culture and at the same time to see the similarities (or the disparities)between the traditions of each country involved in the project; to make the target group be aware of what is being European citizens; to promote language learning and linguistic diversity; to improve education by creativeness; to prevent early school leaving, to make use of ICT tools to disseminate, communicate, share.
For sure the project will arise the awareness of the heritage, the past that turned our countries what they are today and we surely won’t stop here. We will go on exploring what we have in our
basics that make us what we are today in all areas that have influenced us and continue to influence. Closer or not so close to the Mediterranean, we all suffer its influence and will fight to
recover our roots and to understand how our countries have been influenced by it.Students will be aware of their ancestors, of their heritage, of various movements, of trades, of conquests, of environment pollution, of cruises, of politics, economy, history…all connected to the great MEDITERRANEAN SEA.
