Project Summary
The project “Using Sport and Languages for a European Mind in a Healthy Body” enables the sustainable networking of the two partner schools IES Jorge Guillén in Torrox and the Hittorf-Gymnasium in Recklinghausen, which have been working together within the framework of cooperating exchange programs for several years.
The project focuses on sport as a central link in young people’s lives. As a subject of public interest, competitive sports with its protagonists being omnipresent in modern societies have a strong influence on the education of values of young people. In addition, situations which require communication in sports and movement-related interactions are essential, creating authentic foreign-language conversations.
The project is to be made tangible for students of Year 9 and 10 or 4 ° ESO. The group is accompanied by foreign language and bilingual teachers, who are responsible for the coordination, planning, implementation, consultation and selection of the participants.
The cornerstones of the project are five related stays abroad of which four are combined as blocks of two. The first exchange block discusses the respective sports culture with its specific regional characteristics. The focus is put on the communication-promoting effect of sport in cooperative movement situations to enforce the sense of community.
Rules and value systems of sports are experienced, reflected and transferred to the democratic structures of the European community of values. The current training of sport assistants at the Hittorf-Gymnasium as an important element of school health education is eventually to be taken over by the IES Jorge Guillén to enable and motivate students to take over responsible and coordinating tasks in school and sports clubs.
The concrete health culture of the two participating parties is the focus of the second exchange block and serves to raise awareness of the debate on health-related topics and to develop reflected health awareness. Above all, the main focus is on the observation and analysis of health promoting and health restricting influences in both parties.
The learning content is taken up with the final planning, organisation and implementation of a “Europaturnier” (European Tournament) during the last exchange and experiences made in the course of the project are being applied. The tournament thus equally serves as the conclusion and evaluation of the sports assistant course.
For a well-structured preparation and evaluation of the exchange visits, the eTwinning platform is used as a means of organising and communicating. This way, cooperation processes are optimised in order to promote the continuous development of the project and to facilitate the exchange of materials.
The development of a healthy and united Europe is the long-term and leading aim of the project. This idea will be made tangible through the actual experiences made during the project and passed on to the next generation. In addition to the strengthening of the school partnership, the sports aid concept is used primarily to evelop school health education and also promoting the involvement of young people in local sports clubs. They serve as multipliers of the project by passing on the guiding idea.
