Project Summary
The “C.I.V.I.C.S. II – International Cooperation for Empowerment and Validation of Competences between Nautical Schools II” project was presented by the IISS Calamatta of Civitavecchia, in a bilateral partnership with a French Nautical Institute; it had its roots in the past CIVICS I project, approved during the Call 2017, therefore it represented a valid follow-up of the previous project proposal.
CIVICS II was based on the double awareness of the extreme relevance of the nautical sector for the growth of European territories and the adaptation of the common reference framework for the validation and certification of skills to the technical and WBL subjects required by this specific sector of the work. Sectoring technical knowledge and skills, representing an added value in the labour market.
CIVICS II aimed to achieve the following general objectives:
– modernize the educational systems of partner schools, improve the effectiveness of specific training, nautical and logistic training, deepening the interrelationship between education and employment, multiplying the steps between formal, technical, non-formal, informal and WBL learning and expanding certification of skills based on experience gained in an international context
– strengthen cooperation between partners to increase the transparency of the skills acquired in the education path within a nautical institution, promoting mobility and lifelong learning
And the following specific objectives:
– expand the use of protocols developed within the CIVICS I project to technical and work-based learning subjects to propose a more incisive and dynamic training approach that can be reused in a future work context
– continue an exploratory process of validation of skills, related to education in technical institutes with a nautical focus, to facilitate the acceptance and recognition of skills acquired in an EU country and in different learning environments, including non-formal ones
– develop a shared methodology for certification of skills and ad hoc training plans, with a particular focus on transversal skills, on the skills learned in the WBL context during a long-term mobility period abroad, realizing an empowerment of the teaching profession
– support the improvement of the quality of the training curricula provided in the educational path of a Nautical Institute, expanding its international dimension and opening up to technical and WBL skills, choosing innovative indicators and common evaluation tools
The final results we set out to achieve were:
– Extension of the certification protocol started with CIVICS I also to technical subjects and work-based learning;
– Expansion of the audience of nautical schools that adopt and implement the CIVICS certification protocol in the European context, sharing their missions and visions.
CIVICS II foresees the realization of activities involving students and teachers, has been structured in three phases: preparation, implementation and evaluation / dissemination / follow up. As regards mobility, the project included 3 JSTEs and 20 long-term mobility, lasting 3 months, for 10 pupils of both partner schools. The planned LTTAs were functional to the realization, evaluation and validation of tangible results, which would have been:
– Training materials developed during the JSTE and collated in a compendium for teachers, concerning the certification of transversal, non-formal technical and WBL skills in the nautical sector
– Adaptation of the CIVICS Competence Certification Protocol to technical and WBL subjects
– Teaching material for the adaptation of the Joint Curriculum which will be provided to pupils participating in long-term mobility
All the results had to be uploaded to the EDP, therefore highly sustainable and replicable at EU level.
The development of the products would have had a greater focus on authentic formative assessment to improve the pupil’s learning. As for the management part, however, project management intends to apply shared leadership.
The project was equipped with a Dissemination Plan, which involves stakeholders and beneficiaries not directly affected by the performance of the activities.
The project outcomes were expected to create long-term benefits, realizing an impact on multiple levels.
Unfortunately, it was not possible to achieve the aforementioned objectives nor the final outputs due to the premature drop out of the French partner due to the changed conditions of the institution that led the managers to make this decision regarding this project. Nevertheless, some advertisement/dissemination activities have been performed, as well as preparation activities.
