Project Summary
SCOPE
The CHARTER of FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS of the EUROPEAN UNION highlights the “indivisible, universal values of human dignity, freedom, equality and solidarity” and prohibits intolerance and discrimination.
Differences are essential to humanity. They represent a condition of birth and they shouldn’t trigger conflicts or even hatred. Most recent events of the European social stage prove that we continue to be victims of narrow-minded attitudes and according to these we estimate and appraise human beings who belong to different cultural groups according to ready-made ideas and appreciations which are not relevant in depicting reality.
The fact that we are all different and unique individuals should be a reason to celebrate, not to instigate conflicts. No matter which the skin colour is, religious practices and beliefs, family lines or ideas, we feel that all individuals have a right to be respected. As soon as people learn this, we will be ready to live harmoniously in respect and common acceptance.
This topic is the more valuable nowadays, people try to reach European shores for different reasons, they escape from political oppression, war and poverty, as well as benefit from entrepreneurship and education. The countries in the project such as Italy, Spain, Romania and Turkey are struggling to understand immigration and handle it by developing various programs and initiatives. Portugal would like to have some more immigrants and as EU members they are also familiar with this issue. We decided to prioritize this topic for our schools because the sooner students learn about the problem of stereotyping and discrimination, the greater chances will the world change for individuals to coexist in harmony.
Stereotypes like beliefs that some individuals have less intellectual potential than others or that they are inferior lead to discrimination. Stereotypes include negative traits which cause discrimination and bias. Discrimination propagates unfair treatments of individuals based on differences and inferiority which lead to conflict. By annihilating this evil we will educate our students about the uniqueness of every soul, and diminish violent behavior against individuals based on the fact that they are different from us.
We intend to make students open their mind so that they can live a beautiful life free from stereotypical limited mindsets and we would like to nurture the concepts of acceptance, EU democratic values, tolerance, EU citizenship and a culture which promotes care, love and peace.
The partnership addresses a focus group of 370 students of various specializations, girls and boys, aged between 15-18. We see this age as a critical one, when the risk to develop lasting negative attitudes about other people – grounded on prejudices and stereotypical thinking – is very high. The project targets teachers, counsellors and psychologists from our schools who will develop the project’s outcomes into long-term exercise and practices at the local level.
