Project Summary

European Commission says that in Europe we currently use 16 tonnes of materials per person per year, of which 6 tonnes become waste. Although the management of that waste continues to improve in the EU, the European economy currently still loses a significant amount of potential “secondary raw material” such as metals, wood, glass and so on. It seems that only a limited amount is recycled, the rest is landfilled or burned. Because we believe that schools play a major role in the education of tomorrow`s consumers and decision makers, we decided to educate our students about the environment and especially about our consumption habits. We have three main aspects in our project to proceed – environmentally friendly consumption, waste management and recycling.

Main objectives are:
– to share good environmental practices from each country;
– getting to know environmental issues of different countries, comparing these with your own country and trying to find solutions to them;
– to put together an educational video that can be used during the lessons in different countries.
160 students and 50 teachers are participating in the project and 5 countries are involved. Students are aged 14 – 16.

During the project learning activities will take place in five different countries – Estonia, Latvia, Denmark, Portugal and Iceland. The aim of the activities is to share the local environmental problems and try to find solutions to them together. Also positive examples in each country will be paid attention to and discussed which of these could be used back home in different communities.
In addition to study trips constant discussion will be carried out using eTwinning and in lessons on the spot.

Methods used – study trips, group work, manual crafting, different tests, discussions.

As a result of the project students’ knowledge in the environmental field will have increased with the help of the examples from different countries. Also they are more aware of the need of reducing consumption. Their skills in using a foreign language, doing teamwork and finding solutions to several problems will have also improved.
A study video will be made as a result of the project. The video is going to be used as a study material in different lessons and subjects and also distributed to environmental organizations.
As the topics of the environment incl, consumption, waste management and recycling are really actual, the project is sustainable and has an important target also after its activities have finished – the video as well as the topics. Considering global warming and the influence of human action on the environment the topics should be dealt with consistently. The changes will be started by today’s youth.
