Project Summary

The kindergarten “Les Moulins” is situated in the neighborhood Les Moulins in Lille, which is a difficult neighborhood : it has been classified as a “violent zone” since 2011 and it belongs to a high-priority education network linked to Miriam Makeba middle school since September 2015.
It welcomes 126 pupils from 2 to 6 years old, distributed in 5 classes.
Since 2014, our school’s partnership with the Kindertagesstatte “Les Petits Malins” in Cologne is a real motivation for the educational teams of both schools.
The goal of this new project is to allow the third year pupils to become aware of their nationalities and to discover what it means to live in an European country. We want them to experience what Europe is by communicating with a class of the Deutsch-Franzosische Kindertagesstatte of Cologne. Then, we will organize a school trip to further their bonds with their German pen pals.
The theme of this unforgettable common experience will be “nature and music”.
It will be the achievement at the end of a year during which the children will meet regularly through video conference. They will play music together with a musician working for the city of Lille. They will practice singing, linstening and moving their bodies with French and German songs about animals and nature.
The pupils of our school will also have weekly interventions with a German teaching assistant.
In the Kindertagesstatte, the children have two weeks of activities in French and two weeks of activities in German : it will allow them to be able to communicate quickly in French.
The children will chose their pen pals.
All year long, they will make time to write, draw and exchange with them individually.
The pupils in both countries, with their teachers, will discover Europe. They will study the European flag (the colors, the stars…). They will share their knowledge and express their feelings about what they learned. They will explain how they’ve heard of certain countries and will piece together the European map. They will be able to recognize the flags in their cities. They will listen to the European hymn. They will share their knowledge and understanding of Europe and the European citizenship.
To do so, the children will make a video presentation of their life in their school, their city, their European country.
At the end of the year, the two classes will meet in the nature center of Worhmout. It will provide a specific environment with plenty of activities (supervised or not) around the theme of nature.
The pupils of Lille will welcome the pupils of Cologne in their country.
The activities in the center will present the different natural habitats and their animals. The children will fish at the pond to discover the plants and animals in the water. They will also see the impact of humans on the environment.
To link nature with music, they will record the sounds around them and build instruments with the “treasures” they have found on the beach. They will invent songs together.
In small groups, the pupils will have the time to exchange in French and/or in German.
At the end of the stay, the children from Lille will give a tour of their school to the children of Cologne.
Together, they will perform their songs in front of their families. The show will be filmed and sent to the German families.
The show will take place in Makeba middle school, so that the entire network can witness the benefits of such exchanges.
And because the middle school and two primary school of the network are also applying for Erasmus+, this meeting will be the perfect occasion for each school to share their experience.
In 2020/2021, the children of Cologne will welcome the children of Lille and take them to the Panarbora natural park in Germany. In this park, the children will be free to play and talk : they will be encouraged to notice the music of everyday sounds and to discover nature.
Thanks to this project :
> The teachers will renew and improve their educational methods.
> The pupils and their teacher will discover Europe and learn about the European culture.
We want them to embrace the values of Europe : be open to others and their culture and eager to travel around Europe.
