Project Summary

Most experts agree that over the next few decades, the world will undergo potentially dangerous changes in climate, which will have a significant impact on almost every aspect of our environment, economies and societies, and also, the built environment. It is widely known that buildings construction contribute to Climate change. But the main issue is that, how are we going to deal with the direct and indirect impacts of changes in climate on building and construction technology. Construction projects around the world have a significant impact on our environment, both on a local and a global scale. Every stage of the construction process has a measurable environmental impact: the mining processes used to source materials, the transportation of these materials to the building site from sources around the world, the construction process itself and the waste removal and disposal process that follows the completion of the project. With a rapidly developing global economy, it is crucial that we understand how the construction projects we undertake impact the environment and how we can measure and reduce that impact in the future. As the effects of climate change are felt across the world and with the construction industry is responsible for as much as 40 percent of man-made carbon emissions, both governments and individuals are beginning to take the task of building eco friendly houses much more seriously. Fuelled by increased demand a new industry of eco friendly home building has grown up and a whole host of technological innovations have created an arsenal of eco friendly building materials and techniques. From wind turbines, to solar panels, to high efficiency lighting, ultra efficient insulation, glazing, water conservation, plumbing, recycling and much more.
In Lithuania and other Member States of the European Union, workers in the construction sector have no or not enough knowledge, skills and habits that would enable them to respect the rules of environmental impact in the construction process. The “Development of environmentally-friendly (green) training for specialists in the construction sector (DGT4SCS)” project has been planned by Vilnius Jeruzalem Labour Market Training Center, which mainly involves researchers, teachers/lecturers and practitioners from construction sector. ITS’ OBJECTIVES are: 1) to develop and consolidate an environment-friendly (green) culture of work in the construction sector and 2) to increase the supply of the qualified labour staff for the construction sector, which suffers from the workforce shortage and to help to match skills for the job, cover skill gaps as well as “green” skill deficits through efficient training. Its’ TARGET GROUPS are: 1) teachers/lecturers who train/educate future specialists in the construction sector, 2)existing professionals in the construction sector and 3) the managers of the construction sectors’ enterprises, as well as 4) the society. Its’ INDIRECT TARGET GROUPS: 1) contractors for whom the competence of workers in these areas would save money; 2) customers who are interested in making contractors more efficient in order to sell more expensive buildings that are built protecting the environment; 3) waste sorting workers who are interested in not having to work in re-sorting (if the builders are sorting well, the recyclers are less working and no additional costs are transferred).
Development of innovative and effective modules, systems and training activities which would lead towards global environment-friendly (green) culture of work is projected. Project partners will work on sharing their knowledges and practical experience as well as developing innovative training modules, training methods and affective publicity tools.
