Project Summary
Sierra Luna bilingual High School from Los Barrios, belonging to the public schools network in Andalucía, Spain, “AED Sancho I” a non-profit public elementary, basic and secondary aggregation of schools from Vila Nova de Famalicão, Portugal and “Collège St Jean-Baptiste La Salle” a secondary school from Arrandon, France have decided to join together to formalise a Strategic Partnership into the shape of a two-year Erasmus+ Project named The Sea: a Gift for Life, working EU benchmarks (http://ec.europa.eu/education/policy/strategic-framework_en) and ET 2020 objectives.
The idea of developing this Project raises from two priorities: (1) Social and educational value of European cultural heritage, its contribution to job creation, economic growth and social cohesion and (2) Open education and innovative practices in a digital era. These issues are linked to the sea topic, its natural and cultural environment. The three partner centres are coastal and this connection will be used as a basis on which to treat holistically the knowledge transmission about European cultural heritage, the skills acquisition and competences, keeping as essential recipients students who employ new technologies applied to their learning-teaching process in this digital era.
The basis for The Sea: a Gift for Life Project is promoting cooperative learning, highlighting the role played by new technologies in order to improve collaboration with our partner countries. Developing an active citizenship in society. This cooperative learning integrates all students, increases motivation, improves student interaction, favors social inclusion, promotes integration which directly leads us to fulfill one of our priorities. So, a methodology based on cooperation in the learning/teaching process, peer-to-peer, which involves students from similar ages, regardless their social status or background. The paramount behind collaborative learning is that everyone can provide valuable knowledge and learn from another peer as equals.
The Project itself is aimed at integrating and assimilating basic and transversal contents. The promotion of linguistic competence, ITC, together with upgrading students’ self- initiative, autonomy, motivation, selfconfidence, reinforcing the feeling of belonging to a group enhancing positive social interactions, fighting against social exclusion, promoting intercultural cooperation and active participation in society.
The Sea: a Gift for Life is addressed at more than 500 students. Such number of pupils from the three schools will be direct involved in the project activities. A balanced proposal in the distribution of assignments is intended, with an active and committed participation of all the institutions. The applicant institution coordinates all the actions, without undermining the autonomy of each partner with respect to the entrusted functions to the project. Activities such as: logo design, blog creation, glossary and guides elaboration, workshops implementation are an example of the duties to be carried out. The planned mobilities are timed along the two years to amplify the skills transaction, give the Project a European dimension and raise motivation.
Participating in this type of plan must have a direct impact on three elements: the students and their families, the school and the environment.
Our project is based on the idea of going beyond the established duration period. It aims to achieve a sustainable multiplier effect for long. The products obtained from these interactions will remain as tangible, timeless and useful material.
At the end of the Project, there are several expected results: a more active participation and involvement in students’ learning process and society, an improvement in pupils’ academic results, a raise in motivation and awareness in the learning process, wiping out social exclusion, developing their communication using foreign languages, equal, intercultural and transnational cooperation is emphasised. The use of digital new technologies applied to the education field to promote innovative pedagogy in creative, collaborative situations.
A great impact is estimated at the school and local levels (more than 5000 people among students, families and teachers). The Project will lead to a greater personal development of all the staff engaged and will push them to share good practices, learn mutually and enrich themselves beyond the borders of their own countries. The involvement of authorities and companies related to ports and the sea will reinforce the links with the local communities and their demands.
The Sea: a Gift for Life is aimed at trascending its scheduled period. It is planned to achieve a widing effect and a sustainable impact since the obtained results will be integrated into the three schools pedagogical framework. It is hoped that the developed connection among schools allow us work on common objectives after the Project completion. We want to reach further beyond.
