Project Summary

CO-DESIGN YOUR PLACE was created in response to lack of involvement of the youth in designing and facilitating activities in regenerated areas. Due to the lack of substantive and practical preparation, nowadays young people are not involved in the planning and implementing initiatives carried out by public administration and private entities in such areas. In our view, they have a great potential to support and have a significant influence on the change in places which need be creatively redesigned regarding the implementation of new functions. Additionally, they have the potential to strengthen the community engagement, based on its identity, history and social participation, in the spirit of social responsibility and sustainable development.
In consequence, the project aims to increase participation of young people in regeneration initiatives by implementing an international educational program for 18 “youth leaders of change” focused on designing services and innovations to support regeneration development by implementing three national projects carried out by the participants.

This goal will be achieved by:
1. THE DEVELOPMENT OF LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES – sharing the knowledge and experience about service and innovation design, creating sustainable business models in the context of revitalised areas and social entrepreneurship, realised by the Educational Program for 18 participants (August 2019-May 2020) (c1).
2. INCREASING SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT of young people in revitalised areas through the implementation of 3 projects supporting the development of regenerated regions aimed to involve at least 60 people from local communities from London, Copenhagen and Silesia into the participative design process (January – May 2020) (c2).
3. CREATION AND POPULARIZATION OF AN INNOVATIVE MODEL of the inclusion of youth in revitalisation processes in the shape of a handbook and an educational website, with the use of service design methodology, based on tools and values of social entrepreneurship and sustainable development goals (c3).

The group will consist of 18 young people – on average 6 participants recruited by each of the project implementors; Stable Foundation – PL, London College of Communication – GB, and Student & Innovation House – DK. The participants will be under 30 years old and will have the motivation to conduct activities related to the implementation of social change in revitalised areas and inclusion of youth in these change processes.

The participants will go through an educational series, which will give them the competencies enabling to implement the service/solution/social actions supporting the development of revitalised areas, in which they will involve at least 60 people from the chosen revitalised areas of London, Copenhagen, and Silesia. Moreover, the graduates of the Educational Programme will train 25 participants of the Co-design your place conference and 180 people (including organisations) interested in the topic of inclusion of youth in revitalisation processes.

The project will draw upon the methodologies of: Service Design Sprint, Design Thinking, and Business Model and Social Business Model. During the project a method of working with youth on services designing in revitalised areas will be developed. The developed and described method, together with a set of instructions and tools will be popularised and it can be used in the future for engaging young people in regeneration processes.

What’s very important is the broad spectrum of the use of the method, tools, and instructions, as well as the knowledge and qualifications acquired by the participants to independently lead the processes of designing services by youth and to demonstrate to the public administration and business entities very defined and modern tools, as motivators to engage the youth in the planned and already realised revitalisation processes.

The publication and distribution of the handbook and the cascade practical training of its first users will hold long-term benefits related to the inclusion of youth in revitalisation processes, and consequently, to the increased engagement of youth in social development.
