Project Summary
CIVICA – the European University of Social Sciences is a project submitted by an alliance of seven Higher Education institutions: Bocconi University (Italy), Central European University (Hungary) the European University Institute (European Intergovernmental Organization), the Hertie School of Governance (Germany), the National University of Political Studies and Public Administration (Romania), Sciences Po (France), and the Stockholm School of Economics (Sweden). The project aims to form a European inter-university campus that links teaching and learning, research and innovation, and society at large across cultural, linguistic, and national borders. Through coordinated strategic planning, transformative governance and integrated activities, CIVICA will focus on embedded mobility at all levels, joint and flexible curricula, a networked approach to the students’ academic experience, civic commitment and outreach. Through a knowledge-creating model, it will generate solutions to European and world challenges, strengthen European identity and contribute to an internationally-competitive European Higher Education Area. These long-term objectives (horizon 2025) serve as an orientation for new flagship activities. The creation of an integrated physical and virtual European Campus providing: a multi-campus interdisciplinary bachelor’s education focusing on Civic engagement; trans-European pedagogical innovations experimented at a large scale at the Master’s level; an integrated doctoral European space for Ph.D. candidates in the Social Sciences and Humanities; and a challenge-based scientific and educational approach covering 4 priority themes on which social sciences are best equipped to provide solutions to the complex challenges of our times. CIVICA, building on the in-depth cooperation and complementary, multi-faceted expertise of its members, is a sustainable initiative seeking to pioneer and disseminate a new type of European higher education in social sciences.
