Project Summary

CONTEXT

The starting point of the CLIL 4 STEAM project is the shared vision of the project partners all dealing with secondary school students of the importance in answering to the need of their educational systems and of their schools to teach foreign languages.
Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) plays an increasingly important role in language education, both as a feature of foreign language teaching and learning, and as an element of bilingual and plurilingual education.
On the other hand basic literacy in STEM is among the benchmarks identified by Europe 2020 and ET 2020 consolidated educational European Union’s strategies. And the statement on the matter of the OECD Secretary-General, in his inspiring publication “PISA 2015 – Results in focus” recognize that “science is not only the domain of scientists….. in the context of massive information flows and rapid change, everyone now needs to be able to think like a scientist” summarises the vision of the CLIL 4 STEAM project and its objectives.
Thus, understanding the importance of teaching both STEM and foreign languages, partner institutions would like to combine the two key issues in one project.

OBJECTIVES

The objective of the project is to address students under achievement in English as L2 and in STEM subjects through the promotion of an effective strategy for teaching STEM combining them with the CLIL approach to in parallel raise the awareness among teachers and students of the relevance of teaching and learning foreign languages successfully.

Specific objectives of the project are
– Provide secondary school teachers who teach (or are interested in teaching) with the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) method with necessary knowledge and skills to create their own materials through exemplary materials created by experts in the field
– Provide secondary school teachers and students with high quality and highly transferable CLIL based teaching materials focusing on STEAM curricula
– Creating a community of practice through which teacher and educators could share their CLIL materials and tips for teaching STEAM in a foreign language

OUTPUTS on COMPLETION

Through the creation of the Intellectual 1 – CLIL based Educational Videos for STEM teaching the project will:
– Provide a set of valuable teaching aid for the teachers who use CLIL method since they will cover the topics which are included in the core curriculum and examination standards of their subject.
– Motivate secondary school Students to study STEM subjects and increase their performances in key themes for their future success such as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics on the basis of authentic lectures recorded by native speakers of the foreign language they study.
Through this output students will not only have a chance to broaden their knowledge on the topic but also improve their receptive skills of listening and reading and pronunciation.

Through the creationof the Intellectual 2 – Teaching Resources for the implementation of CLIL for STEM teaching the project will :
– enhance the skills and knowledge of teachers of STEM subjects in using CLIL most effectively and in combination with highly interactive teaching tools . The highly interactive and involving teaching resources will result in teachers being encouraged to continue using CLIL in their classroom activities.
The Intellectual Output will have also have a big influence on the students who will be taught with the use of new, interesting materials which will help develop their creativity, critical thinking and problem solving.

Through the creation, use, dissemination and exploitation of the Intellectual 3 – Guidelines for teachers the project will achieve the result of:
– Helping teachers and educators who use content and language integrated learning method for teaching sciences, maths and art to access to the necessary information to broaden their knowledge on the subject of teaching STEM through CLIL so they will feel more comfortable to use the method in their work.
– Also, the publication will contain information on how to create new materials allowing teachers to become autonomous in creating their own CLIL resources for their students
– Providing learners with the opportunity to attend high-quality lessons tailored adapted to their needs the only their teachers can fully understand a cope with and therefore develop their knowledge of the different STEM subject and of the English language according to an integrated and effective didactic strategy.
