Project Summary
In September 2015, the General Assembly of United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Building on the principle of “leaving no one behind”, the new Agenda emphasizes a holistic approach to achieving sustainable development for all. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice. The adoption of the 2030 Agenda and its SDGs represent a change of paradigm of the international policies on development cooperation and also the EU has committed to implement the SDGs both in its internal and external policies. But while the Agenda 2030 has been adopted, the real work is now. The main challenge for the EU is to make Agenda 2030 a reality, making sure we reach all of the SDGs and targets, within Europe and globally. In fact, these goals can only be fully achieved with active and broad youth engagement. In EU nearly one third of the EU population are under the age of 30 (Eurostat, 2017) while, globally, there are 1.8 billion people between the ages of 10-24, which are the largest generation of youth in history. Close to 90% of them live in developing countries (e.g. Latin America), where they make up a large proportion of the population. Connected to each other, young people can contribute to the resilience of their communities, proposing innovative solutions, driving social progress and inspiring political change. Provided with the necessary skills and opportunities needed to reach their potential, young people can become agents of change, mobilizing to advance the SDGs to improve the lives of people and the health of the planet. For these reasons, youth-led organisations and specifically youth workers need to be encouraged and empowered to participate in translating the 2030 Agenda into local, national and regional policy. They can play a significant role in the implementation, monitoring and review of the Agenda as well as in holding youth accountable. With commitment and adequate resources, youth organisations have the potential to make the most effective transformation of the world into a better place for all. Thus, Youth Workers 4 Global Goals (YW4GG) is an initiative that aims to activate youth workers to contribute towards the achievement of the SDGs. YW4GG through a complete cycle of raising awareness of SDGs, use of ICT tools, training course, job shadowing and evaluating will allow youth workers to identify entry-points in working with youth around the SDGs and contribute to the achievement of SDGs in the sphere of youth involvement. YW4GG will strength and empower the Europe-Latin America cooperation in this field.By using non-formal education methodology and youth-approach techniques, YW4GG will build the capacity of seven youth organizations, encouraging youth initiatives and youth inclusion by promoting democratic life in alignment of SDGs theme.
