Project Summary
The short film BORDERLAND is a film about the human perception of borders, what meaning they have in the context of society and in our personal life.
It will discuss the building of a pig fence between Germany and Denmark from a holistic point of view and the human need for borders and how this influence our reality in a society where living in the European Union, modern technology and other factors make our life feel borderless, but on the other hand borders gain more and more important to handle the complexity of our world.
The project is a collaborative initiative by FRIFILM, Denmark, and UnderDOC, Germany, conducted by the young people belonging to those organizations. Us young people are media and film acteurs who would like to gain more experience and professionalization in our work as well as broaden our international network and gain new perspectives.
The main activity of the project is the film shooting itself. This is the part of the film production which includes the most amount of people and is the pinnacle of the filmmaking process. The film shooting will take approximately one week and will take place in the countryside between Southern Denmark and Northern Germany at the border. Before the shooting period, a lot of pre-production will take place. This includes budgeting and scheduling for the production team, as well as crewing, casting and preparations with key artistic crew such as the cinematographer and the production designer. After the filming, the post-production process begins. We anticipate a large part of this to take place in Denmark and we will soon start discussions with Danish post-production offices. Firstly the editor will edit the film, then the sound designer will work on the sound, music compositions will be in place, but need to be mixed in the studio. The colorist will finalize the film as well as design the graphics. Then finally the music will be added and the post-production office can finalize an export the final film.
The next step is to present the film to an audience. We want to reach out through film festivals and organize special screenings and meetings in the border region between Denmark and Germany, but also in other places where our film is significant and can generate a discussion. This is an important part of the dissemination proces.
Another part of the project is the online platform. The platform will in addition to having material from social media, videos from the process and interviews, also be a platform of content and information on our project. The platform is meant to serve as a tool to set the discussion about the building of borders, its interpretation, etc. in full swing, parallel to giving information on the general project. The platform will include behind the scenes videos that will add educational content to other film makers wanting to make a transnational film production.
We aim to gain following via social media platforms that have proven to be mostly used by people in our target group of 13-30-year-old.
We have put down a plan of how we will manage to maintain, sustain and carry out our project successfully and have put out a time frame of 9 months in order to be able to maintain, distribute and reach out to the people in the world that would and could gain inspiration, experience, and help from our work and content. Within these 9 months a film shoot and production, distribution, social media outreach, videos, interviews, webpage will be created and maintained and developed to reach maximum audience. To create creative content, that will appeal to young people, is an important part of the process and one of the important missions and objectives of the project.
We believe that the project has an important impact on the participants and will boost our expertise, give us insights on our learning process together with others, both from our own countries and our neighboring countries. We hope that the project, as a result, will open up a discussion from our perspective as a young generation about the current meaning of borders in society. We look at the microcosm of a pig fence between two countries, but it will give more understanding about the situation in the world and we believe this project has a universal appeal that can impact us, but also the people we will present it to, online and face to face.
In the long term we’ll have extended the connection of the participants of both countries and also the collaboration in the border region between Germany and Denmark. Potentially the project will encourage similar projects, encourage participants to learn and work together in the future.
