Project Summary

About 20 years ago, children used to play outside all day, riding bikes and playing sports. Children of the past created their own form of play. Children now rely on technology for the majority of their play. The impact of rapidly advancing technology on the developing child has seen an increase of physical, psychological and behaviour disorders. According to many independent and formal studies, technology overuse especially affects students’ school success and children spend too much time either watching TV or on computer or other tecnological devices (mobile phone and tablet) instead of doing homework or studying. Although they can understand and play very complex computer games, they can’t even make a proper research on the Internet. In this project with exchange for good practice, children were encouraged to use technology effectively for their lessons and school success because using technology effectively will be an obligation for their future life. Today, every job requires a certain level of technological competences. We, all partner schools, have seen that all of our partners have the same problem with their students. That’s why, we come together for this project. This cross-border cooperation has allowed us to compare our ICT teaching methods and to evaluate their results. Good examples of teaching methods have been exchanged among partners specially in the TPM (exchange theorotical workshops). We all want to make students learn and use ICT actively and properly at school and in their life. For a start, we thought that we could combine technology with children games, because the subject should be interesting for students. And so, they used ICT with interesting topics like games and then they tried the same games in an active environment.
Presenting national children’s games to international friends was a good and fun way to encourage them to use technology. For this purpose, students received four ICT training courses: Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Prezi and Windows Movie Maker. At the end of these trainings, the students received a certificate and produced several works. These products were presented to other partners during the LTT activities. In those activities, students works were assessed internationally. The main objective of the project is to increase the technological skills of children.
The partnership is composed by four countries: Italy, Portugal (applicant organisation), Slovenia and Turkey. The project was developed by several discussions and debates among partners. In all partner schools the misuse and overuse of technology is a common problem. We decided to solve this problem through children games and organised activities to be made in all countries before the mobilities. The activity programme was the following; Microsoft Word Programme Training in January 2017; Microsoft Power Point Programme Training in April 2017; Prezi Programme Training in October 2017 and Movie Maker Programme Training in March 2018.
At the end of the project children:
• increased their social competence and emotional maturity;
• increased their competence in using necessary technological items and programmes like Microsoft Office, Microsoft Power Point, Prezi and Movie Maker;
• were healthier and more active than before;
• were aware of the negative sides of technology on their health;
• were more successful at school;
• had more confidence in using ICT;
• had good skills for job market in future;
• had a greater motivation and satisfaction in learning at school;
• were more respectful to the people not just locally but internationally;
• their learning was more stable;
• improved their communication skills in English;
• had an awareness of similarities and differences of other countries, cultures and living habits and became more tolerant;
• learnt how to cope in different cultural environments;
• had a better awareness of their own culture when comparing to others;
• learnt to accept differences;
• learnt new words and expressions in four different languages.

We worked in English and used new technologies and ICT technics in our activities. The results of the activities were shown in corners in schools, school magazines, and e-twinning accounts. In the children games corner we have published children games for four countries. We published an e-book called “Traditional Children Games in Europe”. We also had a Facebook and WhatsApp group to publish photos and videos of mobilities. The evaluation questionnaires were applied in all schools and were shared. The communication between partners was provided via e-mail, skype, WhatsApp and in a Facebook group. We verified an improvement in the knowledge of our students about the project subjects and other relevant topics such as cultural awareness. We also verified an improvement in English communication skills and teaching methods of our teachers.
