Project Summary
The context of the project “Our Green European Town” was the global change in climate and biodiversity – which effects does it have and how can they be countered? By assessing the status quo of the geological and biological situation and through various activities it was realized how climate change affects different parts of Europe (and the world) and how each individual could act responsibly and in a sustainable way in order to curb the change or its effects.
2018 was the Year of the European Cultural Heritage. One of the aims of it was to promote the exchange and value of the European cultural heritage. This project valued the traditional architecture in our 6 countries and highlighted the importance of protection of these “architectural pearls”.
The objectives of the projects were:
1. Raising students’ interest in natural sciences, their knowledge in environmental protection, sustainable environment and sustainable architecture
2. Teaching our students to adopt eco-friendly lifestyles in their everyday life
3. Raising students’ competences in architecture, promoting the creativity and developing students’ skills in art
4. Raising students competences in ICT
5. Raising students competences in foreign languages
In addition to the 5 objectives already mentioned, our aims are to promote intercultural competence, European integration, promotion of the best practices, better cooperation between teachers and more media competence in the IT sector.
The direct target group was the teachers and students (15-19 years old) of the 6 participant schools. The wider target group was the local community in our 6 regions – our aim was to raise common awareness of the importance of environmental protection, promoting environmental awareness.
Several activities were carried out:
– lectures about global warming and other climate issues
– participating in environmental and economical workshops
– visiting community gardens or associations promoting agriculture in urban spaces
– presenting local environmental challenges to project partners
– calculating personal ecological footprint, analyzing the results
– holding a photo contest “Sustainable Beauty”
– lectures given by specialists about environment-friendly attitude
– making leaflets „How to be eco-friendly”
– nominating „Climate ambassadors“ to share information about eco-friendly lifestyle
– working as a volonteer in a local enterprise/association who contributes to environment protection
– organizing small projects to promote eco–friendly lifestyle
– visiting bio farms and/or bio greenhouses
– creating videos featuring what each individual can do to be environment-friendly
– writing a Charter of Eco-friendly European Citizen, presenting it in European Parliament
– logo contest
– presenting local particularities in traditional architecture
– visiting museums, open air museums and districts/regions with outstanding architecture in our regions
– learning about eco-architecture (lectures, visits) and drawing a plan to build an „eco-house”
– making models of “eco-houses” (paper, cardboard, mostly recycling) and creating an exhibition
– creating plans and making concrete proposals to local municipalities about town planning and real estate development to improve the quality of town space
– creating posters to promote eco-friendly lifestyle
– photo and video editing, making photos and videos about eco-friendly attitude
– trainings about special programs to learn how to design, draw buildings and make models of houses
– creating a virtual eBook and European Green Village webpage
– learning the key-words related to the project topic in every foreign language learned in partner schools
– making subtitles in English and other languages
The schools contributed in different areas of expertise to the project. Each of the participant schools (except Spain in a separate mobility due to covid-19 outbreak) provided lectures, workshops, trainings, discussions and educational programs and visits. The students’ conference was held in the Italian school. The Charter presenting the knowledge acquired during the 2 project years and concrete suggestions to environmental protection and sustainable development in Europe were created and shared. The methodology used in the project was contemporary and collaborative – the use of ICT tools, sharing experiences and working and learning together by promoting team work and trying different roles (teachers as learners and students as teachers), learning outside the classroom uniting the formal and non-formal education.
The results of the project were included in the schools’ curricula and were part of regular school work.
All the participant schools joined formally the Eco-Schools program (under Foundation for Environmental Education) or UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network for Education for Sustainable Development.
The all 6 schools recieved eTwinning European Quality Label.
