Project Summary

The European Union is facing several crises and European integration as such is fundamentally challenged by anti-European and anti-democratic movements. Thus, there is an urgent need for bringing motives and driving forces of European integration into focus. The leading values of the EU laid down in article 2 of the Treaty of the European Union were a starting point for this discussion.

The project „Translating European Values into Practice” (TEVIP) aims to break the abstract framework of fundamental values down into their practical meaning for young people. TEVIP provides interactive methods and materials that allow for discussing European values based on exemplary concrete conflict situations. With the help of simulation games, large group methods, role plays, activating games etc. young people examine how their individual value sets, everyday conflicts and controversies allude to European values and experience the practical impact of European values for their lives.

TEVIP’s target group are multipliers working with young people (aged under 25) who have had no or only few points of contact with Europe-related topics or political and civil education in general before. Methods are especially concepted for non-formal education but may also be used by teachers in formal education systems. Most of the methods can also be a used by international youth groups at European youth events, camps etc.

The products are a collection of materials and a training of trainers manual available in English, German, Polish and Italian and free for download (https://www.tevip.eu/) for multipliers in the field of political and civic education and the European public. TEVIP helps multipliers and youth workers to put European values on the agenda and to conduct interactive workshops on the topic. Participants and recipients are provided with feasible materials, methodical competence in using interactive methods and enjoy a modular workshop concept that can easily be adapted to their individual needs.

All methods and activities that aim at translating European values into practice were jointly developed, tested, assessed and revised by the project partners and their networks. Blended mobility tools were used in order to bring in young peoples experiences and inputs at an early stage. Multiplier events in three countries and a joint staff training transferred skills and knowledge to trainers and helped to disseminate the project results.

The meaning and impact of European values as the fundament of European integration will remain a ‘hot topic’ in the next years. TEVIP contributes to this discussion by providing innovative and interactive workshop formats applicable in the field of non-formal education of youth. In addition the project team pusblished a position paper on the role of European values in the context of non-formal education with the aim of contributing to the public debate. In sum, the project draws a line from today’s political challenges to classic human rights education to methodical competences of trainers and youth workers.
