Project Summary
In times of intolerance, xenophobia and sexual violence – also spread verbally – in movies and media, fears that are often manifested through ignorance and often lead to impetuous actions should be faced with extensive educational work. For centuries the colour pink has been associated to the feminine in our society. It has, indeed, been used to enhance a gendered representation of women’s world, depicted as feeble, dependant, limited to the family inner circle. In the 20th century those elements have been conveyed also to other social groups and have been particularly effective against queer men and women. A lot has been done in the field, also because the emancipatory struggle has paid off. Though still many answers are to be found when it comes to gender equality, sexual tolerance and acceptance of disabled people and men and women suffering from chronic illnesses. The social phenomenology of discrimination and inequality towards the pink-coloured part of the world is still to be unravelled.
Dealing with diversity in our society by far cannot be taken for granted. Due to the lack of a content-related subject in school like “tolerance and appreciation” dealing with education in an ethical context, it is indispensable to deal with the topic in an extracurricular project.
The students will be taught the multi-faceted forms of discrimination in politics, history and economics against people, whose gender identity differs from the norm commonly spread in their country’s society. The students will draw comparisons between the partners’ countries in manifold situations and reflect on them. Forms of sexual diversity and traditional social roles in print and social media will be examined in order to create awareness for the cultural roots of stereotypes.
Thus the project’s main aim is to develop an awareness of tolerance in the students’ minds. Our participants are male and female secondary education students aged between 16 and 20. In total 28 students and 12 teachers will be involved in the project each year.
Planned activities:
Getting to know the participants/ setup of a joint website/ exchange of films dealing with the project’s topic/ watching and reflecting the films/ different competitions on the topic “Pink Europa – color of diversity”/ expressing a situation of acceptance of diversity by means of video, photo collage, sculpture or music and dance/ multi-media presentation on the project’s topic/ research on the topics of social change concerning discrimination within the past three years / 8-hour-internship at an organization caring for disadvantaged people dealing with the topic anti-discrimination/ programme week on the topic “Pink Europe – color of diversity” at the coordinating school/ invitation of organization caring for diversity/ sports competition “Fair Play – Diversity Wins” including disabled and non-disabled students/ visit of a school for disabled young people or visit of a sheltered workshop/ analysis of song texts concerning discrimination and anti-discrimination
Events planned:
A piece of theater at every school as “kick-off-event” for our project and informative meeting for all interested people / Christmas- and Summer Celebrations of Diversity in every member country / Erasmus+ informative meeting: Presentation and Award of the Materials produced for the competitions / exhibition of the work of the students within school as well as in an public building.
The project itself is “hands-on-learning” orientated: Students produce materials in the field of film, photography, Art. Music and sport according to our topic. We also plan a visit of an organization that works with groups of diversity. The students arise their critical awareness by getting information from print and social media.
Long term, this Erasmus+ Project is a means to cooperate with institutions like “Fluss e. Vl” and “Schule der Vielfalt”, with which we already started cooperations. The aim of our school is to be recognized as School of Diversity.
