Project Summary
The FilmTerm project successfully created a comprehensive multilingual film art termbase, the largest film terminology database in the world. The created termbase encompasses film terms in the following languages: English, Estonian, Latvian, Portuguese, Finnish, and French. The termbase is visible on the project website www.filmterm.com.
The partners merged international film terminology expertise, and prior research, unified production standards for creating the audio-visual examples and other materials in 8 fields: screenwriting, directing, production (including film professions and genres), cinematography, art department, film acting, editing, sound department. It combines the research of 60+ researchers and 800+ sources of film literature.
In addition to terms, the database has audio, video, and static image examples, which makes it uniquely suitable for film students, film enthusiasts and underprivileged learners, film scholars, and translators.
FilmTerm project joined as partners European film schools and organizations who are actively involved in film terminology work and in the production of audiovisual learning materials:
• Baltic Film, Media, Arts and Communication School of Tallinn University (BFM);
• Lusofona University
• University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy (UT VCA);
• Lusofona University (COFAC)
• National Film School of the Latvian Academy of Culture (LKA);
• Metropolia University of Applied Sciences (MUAS)
• Estonian Film Database (EFA)
The partners gathered, wrote, edited, and systematized film terminology, and collaborated on the production of term examples.
The project targeted (film)students, film enthusiasts and underprivileged learners, scholars (in particular film scholars and terminology researchers), translators and editors, film schools, and mobile filmmakers.
We are confident that our termbase will aid film students in their studies, will help in carrying out collaborative projects in film research and theory, will be useful in writing and translating textbooks, academic articles, and film criticism, facilitate large-scale international projects, and perhaps make the exchange of lecturers and students more effortless and contribute to some degree to the free movement of film professionals.
