Project Summary
In the Strategic Engagement for Gender Equality 2016-2019, it is stated that: “Promoting gender equality is a core activity for the EU: equality between women and men is a fundamental EU value, an EU objective and a driver for economic growth. The Union shall aim to promote equality between men and women in all its activities.”
Gender-discrimination prevention is a common European concern which cannot be considered on a national scale only.
More and more people – youngsters and adults – want to discuss gender: is it still necessary in our society to use ‘gender’ or could we opt for ‘gender neutrality’?
And despite all that has been done on the subject we feel that now is the time to focus on how this problem affects us in all stages in life both individual and in society such as education, working life and politics.
In our project we will define gender in our society, focusing on education, companies and politics. We want to compare differences and similarities in our countries, exchange good practices and experiences, trying to build a gender-friendly environment.
Later on, we would like to consider “D” gap, not only in terms of gender discrimination but also in terms of Diversity, Differences, DiscriminationS through a follow-up study and sharing of ideas and experiences via the e-Twinning platform.
The object of this project is to examine how gender-system works and appears in different European countries, bring consciousness to teachers and students about a norm critical thinking.
Is it possible to live in a society not using gender distinctions? How do we get away from conservative thinking patterns? How much time does it take to change our mind-set? What could Europe’s role be? How can we influence our students in avoiding gender stereotypes? How do we increase gender awareness? What can, or is already done to prevent this form of discrimination?
Throughout questionnaires, workshops, debat-forum, study-visit and lectures, our project will create awareness among our students which will prepare them for the future Europe where people live side by side on equal terms
Gender used to be ‘not open for discussion’. But nowadays awareness grows, and people recognize gender is complex.
This project expresses the need of more awareness on the topic and the concern about the growing gender stereotyping and the effects on society.
In spite of the idea that rights and equality between men and women are completely fulfilled the reality is different than what we think.
More and more episodes of discrimination and disparity are registered in society and in the labour market.
In some respects, there has been a sort of regression of the perception of the role of women.
The new generation seems not to be aware of the feminist movement and its conquests.
Examining this crucial issue we would like to call the attention of people of many European countries to the importance of equality helping youngsters to be aware of the values of the other gender. We would like to make our students be aware of cultural, social and other types of differences emphasizing women’s role in modern society.
Prior to the transnational exchanges, about 100 students (vocational, general and technological high school students) in the partners’ school will gather information about the gender-system, history and statistics in their respective country which will then be disseminated locally through expositions, press articles and discussions-meetings.
Between the mobilities, students will communicate and share their findings with their European partners via E-Twinning.
This project should be carried out transnationally because it seems important to examine how gender-system works and appears in different european countries, bring consciousness not only to teachers and students but also to every European citizens about a norm critical thinking.
The goal of this project is thus, to prevent any kind of discriminatory behavior (“D” GAP) and express the need of more awareness and to suggest activities to be held at a European level.
For instance, we would like to suggest the European parliament to create a “European/ International day/week against discriminations” like what is done in Lycée Choiseul, one of the project’s partner.
The “time capsule”activity which will be carried out in Belgium in 2019 will be a way to check the improvements reached by Europe ten years from now.
Meanwhile, the results of the topic survey, the preliminary diagnosis whether at a local, national or international level, the suggestions for improvements will be disseminated via the schools websites, the E-Twinning platform, through exhibitions and through a 30-minutes film released in Bayeux, France in 2020. This film could then be a starting point for discussions in other schools or local organisations dealing with gender-discrimination.
the time capsule will be given to the Town Halls as a testimony for the future .
