Project Summary

WE ARE A SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY. CREATING SCIENTIST GROUPS TO SHARE SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES has been a cross-curricular project to enhance sustainable actions in our schools, institutions, and towns as educational communities in the European frame through experimental activities carried out in cooperative learning groups. The main actions involved the whole educational community: pupils, teachers, families and local people.
Five schools, Romania, Italy, Portugal, Bulgaria and Spain as the coordinator, ended the project because one of them from the United Kingdom left the partnership after the first transnational meeting.
The main objectives were:
– to share and improve scientific methodology involving all school teachers and students.
– to share activities, strategies, and experiences about cooperative learning
We were able to implement the actions planned for three years according to the topics of the project:
1. REDUCING, REUSING, RECYCLING, RETHINiKING (year 1)
2. WE USE NATURAL RESOURCES. SAVING WATER. USING WOOD, OUR FOREST IS ALIVE
3. RENEWABLE ENERGY RESOURCES. SOLAR POWER
All objectives were achieved thanks to the participation and involvement of all members who reached great agreements in the transnational meetings. We applied the same method for three years following the same steps:
– analyzing context: preconceptions, previous knowledge about the topic
– asking initial questions: scientifically oriented questions to investigate
– starting: awareness step, hypothesis
– discovering: experimenting, investigating through a variety of activities
– collecting data
– connecting, structuring knowledge
– applying concepts and knowledge
– communicating: students communicated findings, results, and conclusions in front of an audience in conferences, exhibitions and using ICT tools.
– reflexion and assessment
Each organization had an important role and contributed to getting outstanding results. There is a lot of evidence of them on the website and in our schools. The actions were planned and assessed in the transnational meetings. After that, each school adapted them according to its context. Some important evidence of the results are:
-students portfolio
-project’s website
-exhibitions
-festivals
-presentations and conferences.
-reports in educational magazines..
All project’s outcomes will enhance long-term good sustainable practices among local and regional communities in our countries. The scientific method, as well as cooperative learning strategies, will remain our daily life at school. All teachers have shared and learned a lot and our schools have taken part in a European project.
