Project Summary

The main goal of “The Memory Chest” project was the cultural exchange about World Heritage of both countries, Spain and the Netherlands, in order to start an awareness of the
uniqueness of this important matter in students minds. They are the future heritors of our culture! By acknowledging their Heritage, students shared a common ground which will help them to be united in diversity. So this project had contribute to the celebration of tolerance, respect and pride for belonging to the common European place. The main task of “The Memory Chest“ project was to involve both Dutch and Spanish students in a research on our mutual cultural tangible and intangible heritages. The topic Heritage fostered personal development based on student’s own reality. We have managed it as a very powerful educational tool in an integrated curriculum where different knowledge areas have participate. This project also successfully complemented the language training currently being carried out in both schools. The intercultural and collaborative educational practice has been very motivating for our students, who also had the opportunity to travel to the country whose heritage had previously been studied in small mixed groups. The teachers of I.E.S. Pintor Juan Lara in Spain have been longing for a project like this to improve and strengthen their “Bilingual Program”, in which student exchanges are a cornerstone, so this The project has been complementary to the work they were already doing on a daily basis. It has been a perfect opportunity for their students to practice their English language skills in a variety of subjects.
ACTIVITIES AND PARTICIPANTS:
1-Preliminary Inquiry to prepare “The Memory Chest: A Research On Mutual Cultural Heritage”. Among other things, the students attended several talks delivered by entrepreneurs like ANMARTE (a company which developes its work in Tourism performing theatrical representations of historical events in their original siteI) or CÁMARA OSCURA (a company which exploits in a sustainable way one of the most emblematic watch tower in the city of Cádiz).
2-“Exchange”, including: 2.1-The Memory Chest: A Research
On Mutual Cultural Heritage”: Students, in mixed groups (Spanish and Dutch), chose a monument, intangible heritage, such as a piece of music, or a natural area From their surroundings which they considered should be on the UNESCO Heritage List.
The students created a Project through Vlogs, flyers, short video reports in which they pointed out the values of the heritage selected item and explained, following the UNESCO guidelines, why this ítem must better preserved . The results of their work were spread within the educational community through the activity called “The UNESCO Day”.
2.2 “The UNESCO day” was the main activity during the Spanish part of the Exchange. The Educational community and the invited authorities atended a Seminar where the mixed teams showed the results of their researchs.
EXPECTED RESULTS AND POTENTIAL LONG-TERM BENEFITS: -Acquisition of new competences –The students have improved their creativity and digital skills, along with their sense of responsability and the freedom of speech. –All the people involved in this Project shared good and innovative educational practices and improved ways of collaborative work. –Developing this Project has instilled in our pupils values such as solidarity and respect for other cultures. –
– The publication of their Works through Seminars and website has contributed to spread the tangigle and intangible cultural European Heritage. –
– Likewise students have developed and improved their knowledge of one’s own cultural heritage through dissemination tools such as pedagogical publications or websites and blogs produced by students. The final objective was to find elements of the natural
or cultural heritage (material or intangible) which require greater protection and demand the same attitude from the authorities. Promoting such action was one of our goals and a guarantee of fulfilled objectives.
