Project Summary
Many young people are interested in being healthy consumers of food produced with minimum environmental impact, as well as living a sustainable lifestyle. So the Youth, Multimedia and Food (YOOF) project mainly
focused on sustainability in terms of lifestyle as a food consumer as well as producer.
The YOOF project aimed at 18-30 year olds who are not in employment, education or training in the two partner countries. It targeted those who have a practical interest in expressing their views and concerns about sustainable and healthy food production and processing, and who also want to improve their media and digital skills. It enabled them to learn about and develop media and digital skills in order to present their views and entrepreneurship in relation to sustainable food production and consumption.
The main project result was an interactive open educational resource website. It included three short downloadable illustrated guides on filming and media production outdoors, food production and responsible entrepreneurship. It also included details and results of an international media award scheme as well as profiles of young media producers, presenters and entrepreneurs, with examples of their short films, podcasts, and journalistic articles. Additionally two five-day residential workshops were organised in the UK and Spain each for five young people from each of the two partner countries.
YOOF helped young people to gain experience and develop skills related to media and digital technologies in the context of food production, boosting their employability especially in rural areas. It also enabled food enterprises to develop their agrotourism targeted at youth volunteers. The YOOF project made an innovative contribution to rural entrepreneurship education for youth especially about filmmaking and media reporting as well as sustainable food production and processing.
The YOOF project website is a valuable gateway to anyone interested in being part of the YOOF network, a community for learners, practitioners and enthusiasts to develop and share ideas, projects, resources and media, focused on organic farms and their food produce, rural, sustainable development and entrepreneurship. It is just a small seed now, but it may grow as users join up and share their finding, questions and productions. The Network aims to serve as a collaborative platform where users can share posts, photo, videos, share files and bookmarks, react to other’s posts, create Groups, etc. It is interesting to note the media resources sampled, resulting from the YOOF project, as well as other contributors, present and future.
