Project Summary
“Sing me who you are, I’ll sing you who I am” is an educational and musical project that involved 4 groups of children between 8 and 12 years old living in 4 different countries: Belgium, Spain, France and Morocco. This project wished : to show music and song as rich and transversal pedagogical tools, to favour participative, playful and artistic learning methods, but also to promote intercultural exchanges and openness to the Other. For two years, 100 children took part in a programme of educational and creative activities, focusing on the composition and interpretation of songs on the theme of cultural heritage and interculturality. These activities were coordinated by 4 artists from the 4 partner countries – Abel Croze, Geneviève Laloy, Imad Assekkour, Pilar McCarthy – in conjunction with the teachers of the participating classes, and accompanied throughout the process by 2 Cultural Centres and also by numerous musicians and technicians. In concrete terms, this has resulted in regular musical workshops with the local artist (listening to songs and discovering a repertoire composed of various musical styles, vocal, rhythmic and physical activities, song composition, rehearsals,…) as well as workshops led by the foreign artists who came to share their musical worlds. The teachers continued the work in class with more general learning (writing texts, correspondence with other students,…). In addition to this rich learning programme, the project was marked by a number of highlights in which the pupils participated fully: the organisation of public concerts in the four countries filmed and broadcast in the partner schools, the sound recording of the songs composed, the filming of video clips and the making of a making-of. For two years, children and professionals exchanged virtually, and were all to meet during a week of mobility to create together and exchange, but due to the health crisis at COVID-19, this highlight had to be replaced by distance activities.
