Project Summary
“Urban Art for Gender Equality (EQUAL)” was a 12 months capacity building project that involved seven organizations from six different countries (Guatemala, Italy, Cyprus, Togo, Portugal and Spain), whose aim was to promote gender equality and women empowerment through urban art that has been used as a socio-educational tool for participation and social transformation. The main objectives of the project were:-To improve key competences of participants and urban artists for carrying out actions that contribute to gender equality and fighting against gender violence, in order to socially transform their communities;-To build a space for reflection between youth workers and urban artists on parameters, behaviours and attitudes that we have and that are originated from the patriarchal society and how they influence our daily lives; -To exchange experiences, good practices and develop new educational tools between organizations and professionals of seven countries for working inclusion and gender equality through urban art;-To promote a higher quality of youth work, with special emphasis on young people with fewer opportunities, promoting the internationalization of work in these topics;-To create an international network of organizations that work with urban art as a tool for social transformation, inclusion gender equality and comprehensive development, in order to promote cooperation and exchange of good practices between Programme countries and other countries of the world. To achieve these objectives, the main activities carried out were:-Transnational coordinating meeting in Italy where partners specified strategies, working methods and details of future activities. -Local Activities I: analysis of the situation of women and urban art in each country/area, mapping of stakeholders, meeting with artists and institutions, diagnosis of women profiles and specific learning and training needs of urban artists, identification of good practices.-Mobility of youth workers/Training Course (3 per organization) to Malaga (Spain): Training about urban art, gender and equality. Among the topics: social and pedagogical module, creation of workshops, visibility activities and visits.-Local Activities II: implementation of new knowledge, methodologies and competences, local workshops and visibility activity.-Mobility of youth workers/Job shadowing: one professional from each partner organisation went to another country/organization for an observation period.-Production and dissemination of project outputs (eBook, videos and song) and outcomes and its multiplication. -Final conference in Guatemala where the main results of the project, the activities carried out in each country, as well as the personal and professional experiences of participants and the impact of the participation in a European project have been presented during an internal meeting among project organizations held in San Andrés Semetabaj. For giving visibility to the project among local population, a public event has been organized in Guatemala City with the presentation of the project, a debate about gender equality in hip hop, the presentation of project results, workshops for young people and a hip hop event. Finally, this project had an important impact on participants (new acquired and/or improved competences, professional and personal development, etc.), organizations (use of new competences and tools, exchange of good practices, better quality of the work, etc.), and also on the society in general (greater awareness of the situation of women in each country, wider interest towards urban art, etc.). We took the most from each organization, we maximized synergies and we promoted the cooperation and exchange of good practices through a network of organizations that work on urban art as a tool of social transformation, inclusion and participation.
