The purpose of the project “Transformation of Hate Speech in Youth Work” was to equip youth workers and other persons working with youth groups with methodological approaches of hate speech transformation. Organisations and participants who took part in the project were from three partner countries: Slovenia, Ireland and Finland. The projects follows 6 key objectives:
1.) Through international trainings equip a team of 5 youth trainers from each partner organisation in the field of “Hate Speech Transformation”. Key importance lies in the profile of the youth trainers, who themselves are people with marginalised and/or minority backgrounds. Participants gained many new competences for trainers work and creating materials, knowledge about transforming hate speech and working in a diverse group.
2.) To equip each partner organisation with a training strategy that will allow for an expert and sustainable approach towards addressing and prevention of hate speech in the youth sector in each participating country. Organisations gained important element fro their further sustainable work in this field.
3.) To develop a practical manual (IO1) for youth workers (useful for anyone working with youth groups in which hate speech occurs) that will methodologically equip them for tackling hate speech in their work with youth through transformative approaches. Youth workers and people working with youth gained important resource with concrete activities for tackling hate speech using transformative approaches.
4.) To develop a one day training workshop for youth workers, that was implemented by the youth trainers capacitated in this project in every participant country. During the training (5 in each country) youth workers gained the competences of hate speech and/or behaviour transformation in youth sector. As part of developing process there testing workshops were held.
5.) To develop a manual for youth organisations, organisations working with young people, schools and other organisations that work with groups of young people (IO2), that will guide them towards the establishment of an internal organisational strategy and capacity building process for the establishment of a “safe space from hate speech and hateful behaviour”. This is first manual about topic of inclusion in Slovenia and presents important resource in Ireland and Finland for all organisations, not just youth organisations, in the filed of inclusion and working with marginalised youth.
6.) Include local partner organisation in the process of developing manual for organisations (IO2)in a form of feebdacks on self-assessment tools and sharing their good practices. This meant beginning of active work with topic of inclusion. At the same time netowrking and working in this network of organisations allowed further cooperation for organisations and developement of the sector.
The project did in 16 months train 23 youth trainers, 18 of them were from marginalised backgrounds, capacitate 380 youth workers and have an impact on 7600 young people within the 3 partner countries. It had an important impact on the development of the youth sectors in the field of hate speech transformation. With that, it will make a long-term contribution towards social inclusion of marginalised youth and towards fighting racism, homophobia, xenophobia and other forms of intolerances and discrimination.
