Project Summary
The project of the music high schools in Prague and Linz (Gymnazium a Hudebni skola hlavniho mesta Prahy und Adalbert Stifter Gymnasium Linz) is a joint orchestral project which shall bring highly gifted musicians of both countries together. Both schools are senior high schools for students aged between 14 and 19 and have special programs for very talented musicians. They have an equal standard in instrumental education and are primarily oriented in classical music. These requirements allow working at very high level and to invite the best teachers for studying the orchestral parts. Both schools also have a very similar basic pedagogical conception in teaching music. But there are differences, for example the school in Prague has a very long and intense tradition in teaching string instrument players. Due to the fact that in Upper Austria brass bands are a traditional factor for countryside villages there are better conditions for brass and wind instrument players. The most important purpose of this project is to come in touch or even develop new methods of working professionally on high-level concert programs for students as well as for their teachers. The aim is to increase motivation for rehearsing processes and the expansion of personal competences and soft skills. Furthermore ideal rehearsing and concert requirements shall be established for highly gifted pupils within an educational context. In the same way this project also corresponds with the necessity of keeping cultural knowledge and competencies alive as well as to pass on the tradition of a transnational music culture. This is absolutely important in times when classical music is in an existential crisis and when everywhere institutions who might have been employers for our young musicians are forced to close down like orchestras, opera houses and many others. There are, of course, transnational orchestral projects but usually for students music universities aged 18 or older who very often also organize these events. This project is insofar innovative as it provides the possibility for 14 to 19-year-old pupils to work within an educational context with the best teachers to study and rehearse music in a most authentic way and to perform on a professional level.Four concerts are planned – two chamber music recitals and two big orchestral or choral-orchestral concerts with a maximum number of 83 pupils and ten teachers who are teaching music at one of the both schools and who for many years have gathered now experience in planning and executing rehearsals and concerts as well. The exchange programs will be organized by each school which also includes the organization of the concerts and all activities connected with it from public relations to the postproduction of a CD recording, Linz and Prague alternating. The results of this project are the four concerts on professional level and in prestigious concert venues. The pupils will get an individual gain of artistic competencies and abilities as well as a rise in linguistic competencies in cooperation with international artists. Also social competencies will increase by coming in touch with other cultures and by reducing prejudices and barriers. The teachers will also have new experiences and will learn new competencies and methods in organizing and programing concerts. These experiences and the raised abilities and extended competencies might increase the pupils’ chances to study at a music university and might help them to find the right job in the world of music. For the institutions this project should increase the reputation in public perception and can be the starting point for further projects extending to a multilateral cooperation and even to a network of music high schools in Europe.
