Project Summary
This projects gathered five partner schools from Portugal, Italy, Poland, Spain and Turkey, all secondary ones, three regular and two VET.
It aimed to design a new approach to develop secondary students’ social and civic competences, based on a active methodology that allowed students to use ICT (namely OERs – internet searches, portable devices, video editors, graphic design softwares, online questionnaires) and live interviews, with which they recorded, edited and uploaded several videos (whose scripts were prepared by them), producing innovative and atractive teaching materials related to these competences, which were included in schools’ classes.
During the LTTAs, organized under an axis each – Individual Citizenship; Social Citizenship; Local/regional Citizenship; National Citizenship; European Citizenship – students were organized in mixed nations groups and, mentored by teachers, they did three types of activities: drawing posters related to the subject, as a first approach to it, developing their creativity and allowing the host school to have several posters, created and targeted to students, to hang on its corridors (important for internal and external (visitors) communication); design scripts for the interviews, after research and consequent systematization of its results, recorded them, edited them and uploaded them, to be used as resources on partner and other schools; visited national landmarks related to the topic of that meeting (parliaments, public services, NGOs, …) and critically reflecting over it.
It had definitely shown all our students the dimensions of a full European Citizen, like free movement of people to live, study and/or work (the EURES network was unknown, even for some teachers); the European Health Insurance Card, that allowed them to go to a public hospital for free, as they were local citizens; the Democratic basis of Europe and their own country, regardless of the political organization (local vs. regional vs. central; republic vs. monarchy;);…
The final activity of each activity was a critical analysis report detailing what they learnt during that week, comparing with the result from the diagnosis questionnaire.
There were several videos created after designing and implementing a learning methodology, where students are in the center of transversal projects, prepared under School’s Mission and with imputs from stakeholders.
Not only students learnt several topics in a different way, but they came much closer to several areas of society they were just aware, from NGOs to several areas of political intervention (local, regional and national), so they were able to demystify topics, interventions, places they usually only know from books, TVs, …, so they are now able to interveign in society, in a way they – their parents and teachers – had never considered.
For schools, this project brought a whole new level of recognition from their stakeholders, new structured national projects signed/awarded, new students, a recognition of their praxis by current and potential families and students.
