Project Summary

The project “5 senses for SEN”- SHTTS”: “seeing”, “hearing”, “touch”, “taste” and “smell” helped 4 project partners – special schools from Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland and UK- get deeper acquainted with different types of sensory education and to break down the most common sensory barriers that SEN pupils can face. Just five little words used to describe our senses, but five little words with such huge importance. They sum up the key ways in which we, as human beings, learn throughout our lives, from the moment of birth, about the world around us and how we can survive in it, live in it and enjoy it. All children need help learning how to use their senses.
Project target groups – pupils with SEN from 9-15, teachers and other staff working with them.
The project aim was to combine and use expertise from each other. We studied a number of topics specifically related to the sensory education of SEN (special education needs). We shared good practice of the participants for instance in what way is the TEACCH method/strategy applicable for children with autism in the playgrounds around the school and in the classrooms. The project objectives were:
– find out more about the types of the Sensory education and increase knowledge, experiences and skills;
– to experience the importance and pleasure of sensory education;
– to identify examples of good practice which could be replicated in our schools;
– to enhance our understanding of the education for low achievers, pupils with mental retardation, physical handicaps and autism;
– to improve the mental and social wellbeing of disadvantaged people;
– to contrast and compare different educational systems, in general and for the pupils mentioned above.
We organized 6 short-term training events: 3 for the staff and 3 exchange of group of pupils in which totally attended 98 participants and 28 accompanying persons. Due pandemic situation the last short-term training event for the staff was organized Virtual and gave a possibility to involve 40 participants.
With the help of this project and a possibility to organize exchange of good practices we reached the most important benefit – improvement to the quality of using sensory education activities in and outside the classroom.
The project was carried out transnationally and we worked cooperatively between different countries and cultures, shared new approaches in teaching children with SEN especially in sensory education, raised teachers’ awareness of the importance of comparing and sharing methodologies, forms of school inclusion and practical knowledge of disabilities.
