Project Summary

Research done in the recent years shows a very weak level of political participation of youngsters in Georgia. Some of the most relevant figures showing this tendency are:- 15-29 year-old young people in Georgia live rather inactive public lives. (UNICEF, Youth National Study, 2015)- 10,9% of youngsters took part in solving youth-related issues (UNICEF, 2014).- Only 2% of youngsters attended a social demonstration or a political party meeting (Friedrich Ebert Foundation, Generation in Transition, 2016)- 45% of youngsters never discuss political issues with their friends or close relatives (CRRC, Caucasus Barometer, October 2017)- In the 2016 parliamentary elections 40% of youngsters (18-35) did not vote (CRRC, Caucasus Barometer, October 2017)In contrast to these figures, 90,4% of youngsters believe they have the right to participate in solving issues related to youth (UNICEF 2013). The project Empower for Change – Strengthening Local Capacities for Youth Participation aims at strengthening the capacities of local youth structures to engage into an inclusive and participatory cooperation on youth issues in Georgia through mutual learning from European practices and a competence development programme for youth organisations and civil servants. The project is composed of three core activity clusters which contribute all to the realisation of the project objectives.Activity Strand 1 – Competence Development for youth fellows (YLTP) and civil servants (CSTP)The YLTP educational programme aims to equip young leaders with the ability to conduct community needs assessments, community analysis, design and conduct local activities fostering youth participation.Activity Strand 2 – Youth City Hall Programme (YCHP). The programme aims to provide a platform for cooperation between municipalities and youth organisations to co-develop and jointly establish sustainable forms of cooperation at municipal level for addressing youth issues.Activity Strand 3 – Sharing Practices – Learning Together (SP-LT)With the help of thematic seminars an exchange of practices and approaches on youth participation and empowerment for community-based youth work, the tool box of youth workers and youth organisations working in EaP region shall be strengthened through a mutual learning process.Accordingly, the project will address the following objectives:- To increase the competences of youth leaders and civil servants to address youth issues in a participatory and inclusive manner on community level- To foster the establishment of sustainable forms of cooperation between local youth organisations and local authorities- To enhance an international exchange on practices for municipal cooperation for youth in EaP region.
