Project Summary
The project was created on the basis of existing contacts between the schools (Denmark, Greece). There was already a trusting cooperation in European projects. The exchange led to the awareness that, despite their differences, the schools encountered a similar problem: health education and care on a physical and emotional level is the basis for cooperation and school success. Pupils, parents, teachers are faced with the challenge of creating a holistic health awareness for school success, happy living and participation in European society. Each school is already pursuing approaches (nutrition, sports, prevention, student projects) to meet this. However, all seek an increase of effectivity and an expansion of existing programs. Diversity of schools is the key resource used for the innovative design and development of schools. The new partner schools from Lithuania, Northern Macedonia and Slovenia, which were specifically searched for via the eTwinning portal, also formulated the problem of lacking health awareness and offer solutions for that. The six participating schools are secondary schools with the same age structure (11 to 18 years). All have a coordinating “Europe-team”, counselling services with social workers and offer their students catering or sports activities. Project participants from all social classes attend special courses (elective courses, working groups, Europe courses) in which they are networked across the borders of their own school using eTwinning. Thirty students attend each of these courses, which are open to all students in the school community. At “AULs” there are 2 teachers and 4 students who actively participate, thereby creating new experiences. “Together for a healthy life in Europe – We make students strong!” describes what is the project goal: Through comprehensive and holistic health awareness, we sustainably promote well-being and resilience of students for a conscious, contented and self-designed adult life in Europe. Self-efficacy and personal resources are demonstrated at the pupil- and teacher-level and used to enhance health awareness and the personal role in the school system, actively shaped by students in a health-promoting way. Well-being is thereby a pillar of school success, in exchange, active design of the school environment by pupils and teachers experiences innovation and more space, the participation of each school at the topic “Europe” is consciously experienced (in particular by young people, who otherwise do not have access to this field of experience). Increasing the health-conscious participation in school life on the one hand inspires the educational performance of the individual and on the other hand offers concrete incentives for a sustainable life concept in Europe. The activities of the project can be found on four levels: teacher training (exchange of concepts / workshops), short-term exchanges for student groups (workshop design, school presentation, consolidation of results / implementation), information of parents (events, parenting) and Europe (exploration of twin cities as active Europeans, joint campaign “We make students strong!”).
In choosing the methodology, all levels and social classes are taken into consideration by setting experience as the starting point of work. The project follows the structure and implementation of the Think-Pair-Share-Principle: 1) At home, inventing solutions in the project 2) during the AULs discuss, share, prepare for distribution 3) spread innovative ideas at home. This principle can be found in the AULs, too. Watching the school, participating in workshops, experiencing Europe – these are the basics for activating, integrating, developing, spreading, implementing the examples of good work. The project is bilingual. Concepts are exchanged in English and translated into the mother tongue. In each case the result is the template for innovation and implementation of the solution approaches for use / multiplication in one’s own system as concept template, mind map, PowerPoint, experience documentation (quikfilm, posters, …). All results and reports are presented in the online portfolio on eTwinning and the school homepage. Surveys, statistics, flyers, posters and spread presentations will be produced for the ongoing campaign “We make students strong!”. In this way we work “Together for a healthy life in Europe”, by exchanging good examples of our work in the schools, facing the challenge of healthy living together, shaping our schools for the future and making our students fit for a successful, independent life through active experience and contribution as an active European citizen.
