Project Summary

There are many elements that make up the national culture. Folk songs are one of the most important elements of our cultural heritage. They are the identifications and representations of dreams, joys, sorrows, and history of a society. Based on the universal power of music, our project is shaped by the belief that we can come together under the umbrella of folk songs to create a strong link between different cultures and a substantial idea of European citizenship.
As a result of the rapid development of technology, an industrialized, mechanized model of society emerges, and in this structure a mechanized youth grows. It is seen that these young people cannot analyze social problems and cannot connect with society. They are indifferent to all cultural values and heritage. We have developed our project with the need to introduce cultural values to these young people who are in a tendency to disappear in the virtual world. We aim to make them aware of
cultural richness of European countries, notice the differences and respect them; underline the similarities and acquire a sense of being a member of a big European family.
In determining the subject of our project, we have discussed it with potential partners by means of eTwinning and Schooleducationgateway. We then decided upon the methodology , activities, participants, quality of properties of participants, targeted results in short and long terms and all kinds of outputs.
We are 5 countries, Italy (coordinator) , Romania, Turkey, Portugal and Croatia. The participants are the students, teachers and administrative staff of all the schools. Our students are in the 14-18 age range. Families, non-governmental organizations, institutions and organizations, local governments and local communities will be included in the project activities.
The cultural value of folk songs, the stories that lie behind the songs, folk songs by the regions, folk music instruments, folk song artists, folk dances and local clothes are the main topics to be covered in the activities. A book will be prepared that includes some folk songs of each partner, the stories behind them, the lyrics in native language and in English. Students will sing some of their folk songs with their peers, teachers, families and grandparents and we will record them all in a CD. This activity
will be a bridge between the students and different age-scaled people. So, this output will serve our aims to break down all the gaps between the youth and the world around them. We will prepare a calendar that shows each partner’s folk music elements such as instruments, famous folk song singers, a picture dictionary introducing some key terms. Another CD will be recorded including the students’ folk dance performances. A photo album that introduces each partner’s folk dance costumes, local clothing and other cultural heritage will be prepared. Students will take the photos and bring them together. We will sing together one of the Turkish folk songs in Turkish and this performance will be recorded with the name “International Choir”. Activities, boards, wall papers, posters, slides, videos will be prepared, public concerts and folk dance performances will be organized.
While doing all local and transnational activities, students will use English and this will make them aware of the importance of bilingualism. They will learn to use ICT applications which will enhance their technological skills as regards ICT. The students from different ethnic identities, low economic and social family backgrounds, female students who do not have chance to take important roles in social life will be at the center of our project. This will help us not only boost their skills in concrete
terms but also increase their self-confidence, sense of being part of the whole. Moreover, these activities that they do together will wipe out all kinds of discrimination and prejudices among our students. All of the teachers will broaden their educational and pedagogical skills when they collaborate with their European colleagues.
Disseminating the project activities will carry all these benefits to our parents and society. We will share our project with local newspapers, magazines and TV channels. We will form social media platforms and a website. We will publish leaflets introducing our project and distribute these leaflets to all nearby schools, parents, local organizations. Meetings will be organized to give information to our parents. All of the outputs will be free to download on our website and CDs will
be given to libraries, non-governmental organizations, schools from all levels. In brief, gathering under the umbrella of folk songs will be a way for gaining cultural awareness, recognizing other cultures, understanding tangible and intangible cultural heritage, eradicate the prejudices and discrimination, enhance skills in linguistic and technological basis, develop entrepreneur spirits.
