Project Summary
In response to the growing energy demands of today’s societies, renewable energies provide sustainable solutions to safety, health, environmental and economic concerns. Inexhaustible, low greenhouse gas emissions and affordable, renewable energies are certainly the future. The stakes are high: if we do not make this transition, our planet will not avoid the impacts of climate change. The mission of this project is therefore to encourage new generations to think about this energy transition. They must also become aware that everyone can take action at their own level by becoming aware of their own energy consumption. This type of problem deserves a large-scale reflection, which is why a European project allowing young people from these four different countries to meet each other will be very enriching for them. For example, one of the partner countries, Iceland, produces 100% of its electricity from renewable resources.
Education is the key to the ecological transition. As UNICEF3 points out, this means “raising awareness among children and young people, but also making them aware that action is needed”. Youth must be educated and become a full partner in the achievement of 17 Global Sustainable Development Goals set in 2015 to reach the targets by 2030.
In a project-based approach and thanks to cooperative arrangements establishing a genuine democratic life, this Erasmus+ project proposes that students, as future responsible citizens, should be able to express their ideas, confront them with others and, in particular, imagine how they can participate in the necessary transformations of society. By referring to a certain number of values such as listening, respect for others, sharing, mutual aid, solidarity, responsibility, autonomy, cooperation and by developing a cooperative pedagogy which gives meaning to learning, this project also fully fits in with the objectives of teaching.
Through this project, students will also meet many actors involved in environmental protection and energy transition, whether they are scientists, volunteers from associations or politicians. This will enable them to learn more about these many sectors of activity that are recruiting and to encourage further studies in the scientific fields.
Each European school involved in the project has its own climate and energy resources. The field trips organised during the meetings will therefore be rich both scientifically and humanely. One of the objectives is to create a sense of belonging to the same fragile planet as the Earth and our role in its preservation.
A limited number of students aged between 15 and 19 years old, “ambassadors” of their high school, will participate in each of the mobilities so that the group of high school students trained on site is not too large and allows exchanges and visits to the sites in complete safety. For dissemination at different levels, all the activities carried out by the students before, during and after the mobilities will be grouped together on a twinspace. All communication will be in English. The link to access the twinspace will be accessible from the sites of the 5 high schools (from a tab dedicated to the Erasmus project on the high school’s site).
The local media will be involved in all the partner countries (radios, newspapers,…).
The benefits for the participants directly related to the topic will be :
– encourage citizen involvement in the ecological transition and encourage students to become involved in ecological actions and environmental protection in general.
– to develop the practice of civic, argumentative and scientific debate,
– Mutualize and share best practices between different countries to take care of the planet.
– raise awareness among students, teachers and the local community of the importance of reducing our energy consumption and changing our daily behaviour.
We will be able to promote effective teaching strategies to provide quality education in the field of new energies, helping teachers and students to integrate environmental and energy management principles and practices into the school curriculum.
We intend to establish a sustainable relationship between all European schools. The pupils involved will receive a “European eco-citizen” certificate and the heads of the different schools will be able to sign a twinning charter. This project will serve as a showcase for the different high schools as a promotion of scientific culture and education for sustainable development.
