Project Summary

The project “Stats on Life” (SOL) promoted innovative practices and learning methods (Learning by Researching, Collaborative Learning, Content and Language Integrated Learning) through collecting and analyzing data on various aspects of life in three European countries ie Finland, the Czech Republic and Spain. The idea was to enhance basic skills in mathematics, science and foreign languages (statistics, multiliteracy) and to promote the use of modern ICT at school.

In the project “Stats on Life” pupils studied, compared and presented information and results gathered from different countries and learned about other cultures (European dimension). Pupils studied their everyday life and environment by making questionnaires with Google Forms and doing interviews in matters they found interesting. We had three themes : School and Education, Family and Freetime, and Culture and Society. After gathering data, students produced statistical presentations using Excel and Power Point and shared and published them in English.

As to the partners of our project, Finland (Kannelmäki Comprehensive, Helsinki) represented northern Europe, the Czech Republic (Gymnázium Jeseník, Jeseník) represented middle-east Europe and Spain (IES La Albuera, Segovia) represented southern Europe. The age of the participating pupils was from 12 to 18.

At the end of the project we had a considerable amount of statistical data and graphs, which allowed comparisons between participating countries and cultures. The results of the research projects (statistics and comparisons presented in various ways) as well as the material produced to gather information and produce statistics (questionnaires, quizzes, interviews etc.) was put together in an e-Book, published on the net, so that everyone can consult it and use our material freely.

Our project encouraged both pupils and teachers to cooperate in interdisciplinary projects. This led to enhanced basic and transversal skills and to a new, more collaborative working and learning culture in the participating schools. Phenomenon based learning increased cooperation and the number of cross curricular projects in each school, paving the way towards a more participatory approach to learning and teaching and encouraging pupils to life long learning. The project also gave teachers the chance to exchange good practices and develop their methods. What is most important, learning by researching and phenomenon based learning, accompanied by new technology, can be actively used as methods also after the two-year-long project period in all the participating schools. We believe that our project inspired enthusiasm and confidence in each participant school and might serve as an example for other schools.
