Project Summary

The project “PHOTOHISTORY – where past and present come together.” was a partnership between 5 European secondary schools. It involved 60 student and 40 teacher mobilities but the true number of participants involved was at least twice as high. The main aims of the project were to foster students’ creativity through the means of artistic expression and change their perception of history as a boring subject. The project was an interdisciplinary one connecting history with photography. During this project students created their own photographic reproductions of famous historical events captured on drawings, paintings and old photos. They exhibited their works in public venues and explored history through captivating history workshops conducted outside the school walls. The project was conducted in whole through the use of a problem solving method so students had to cooperate together to achieve its goals. The project also involved the use of an innovative Aurasma/HP reveal application to create “Augmented Reality” Augmented reality connects real objects like buildings, pictures or anything really to digital information. Each school created an augmented reality spot in their school which contains real-life objects, pictures, logos, their own and partners’ reproductions or slogans that they gathered during the mobilities. When you point to such object with your mobile phone or other digital device with Aurasma app installed on it you will get some additional information about it on your screen, like for example, movies, sounds, other photographs or a description of the object. The ideas created with this app are limitless therefore very creativity-oriented with enormous teaching potential. Thanks to the project all the participants not only improved their photography skills and knowledge of history, but also learned history from a different, another country’s perspective, increased their motivation to learn history, improved their language skills and most of all became more creative, independent learners. As a long term objective we plan to develop our augmented reality spots into augmented reality schools in the future and most likely they will become a catalyst for another international partnership.Students not only discovered the history of their own country, but also the history of other European cultures. They gained unique historical perspective on European Union as a whole, which in turn triggered more empathy and mutual intercultural understanding.
