Project Summary

The project ‘The future of work in the European Union’ prepares pupils aged 15 to 17 for a European labor market that is going to be more diverse, socially inclusive, technologically innovative and international than ever. It involves a strategic partnership of two years between six schools from Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Lithuania, Greece and the Netherlands.

Every school year, students from these schools complete a cycle of four phases to work together and understand what the future European labor market will expect from them.

In phase 1, pupils communicate virtually via eTwinning to become familiar with the topic, each other and each other’s countries.

In phase 2, more than 100 Dutch pupils travel in five groups to the other five countries for bilateral exchanges to work on research projects related to the future of the European labor market and to get engaged in all sorts of social, cultural and sports activities. The results of the research that will be conducted during these five bilateral exchanges will be disseminated among all participating pupils of the project. In phase 3, the pupils from the five non-Dutch countries all travel to the Dutch school at the same time for a multilateral exchange week. This unique event creates a truly European week where students from all six countries meet, work together on research topics but also get engaged in all sorts of social, cultural and sports activities. The students’ research results will be disseminated among all the participating pupils of the project.

In phase 4, after the exchange is over, students write a) a personal plan in their own school with actions that they can take to prepare themselves better for the future European labor market and b) a policy plan for their school boards on how the school curriculum could change to better prepare all pupils in their schools for the future European labor market. Of course they make use of what they have learned from their fellow students from (some of the) five other countries.

Finally, they will disseminate the results of all their research findings and experiences to all their schoolmates by creating an information market in a central place in the school.

Our project will offer our pupils better language, research and cooperative skills. They will obtain a better understanding of what challenges technological, demographic and socio-economic developments have on our labor markets in general and on them personally as a future employee. Lastly, our project will contribute to an open attitude with our pupils towards people from other national and ethnic backgrounds and teach them how to cooperate effectively in a diverse environment, so the European spirit can be passed on to the next generation.
