Project Summary
The project topic “Inclusion – a human right” was dealt with by teachers and students from six European schools. On the one hand, participating students worked on legal, ethnic, structural and social requirements of inclusion. Thus students could clearly see that no individual should be ostracised or marginalised in society and they have learned that all individuals are endowed with a life-long right to take full part in social life on the basis of self-determination and equal opportunities. On a more practical note, on the other hand, participating students, teachers and stakeholders elaborated various ways of putting inclusion into practice, namely in the fields of schools, sports, kindergarten and local communities.
The exchange between partner schools required a sufficient command of ICT skills in order to facilitate planning, implementing, documenting and presenting work on the topic. Furthermore, team work and willingness to communicate as well as openness played a major part in the project, both on a national and international level. To that effect, working parties were established the task of which being the coordination of communication processes interpersonally as well as internationally with the participating teachers functioning as advisers.
A common platform will be provided in the form of a dropbox/cloud. This way, it guaranteed access to information and results relevant to the project in German, French, Italian and English. By working with all stakeholders from the partner schools, the students have increase their foreign language skills and have gained knowledge of international teaching methods and studying techniques.
In the framework and course of this project, students were in close contact with local and national administration and authorities and researched different approaches to inclusion. The students were in charge of documenting the project and they also presented their findings and preliminary as well as final results to fellow students, teachers and parents and local/regional bodies. Processes and events of the ongoing project were published in the local and regional press.
The main result for Edith-Stein-Schule was the creation of guidelines for an inclusion policy the content of which can be found on the website of the school. Another equally important result was an interactive map of the city of Neunkirchen which shows accessible ways throughout the city.
