Project Summary

Scoil Phobail Bhéara is a post-primary school located on the Beara peninsula in west Cork. Lycée Chrestien de Troyes is located two hours east of Paris in the Champagne-Ardenne region. Our two schools have already organised one short-term school exchange and Lycée Chrestien de Troyes has extensive experience of Erasmus+ projects.

We would like to enter an Eramus+ twenty month program in order to get funding for both long-term and short-term exchanges. Our main objectives are to build on students’ language skills and competences in French and to enhance social inclusion. This exchange will be focusing on European cultural heritage, as symbolised by the traditions of fishing (Castletownbere) and champagne production (Troyes)

In each year of this project a group of 12-14 Irish students will visit France for 7 days, and later in the academic year the same number of French students will visit Ireland. On each trip they will be hosted by families. The participants will be in Transition Year/Classe de Seconde (16-17 years old), with some in 5th year (16-17 years old).

During their stay, students will attend school in the host country and participate in targeted cultural outings. Each year 2-3 students will spend between 3 and 6 months in France/Ireland as part of a long-term mobility project. Each student will be hosted by a family and participate in daily life, including schooling.

Immersion and active participation will be the main methodologies used.

The results expected are an increase in skills and competences in French, a certain degree of leadership in the French/English classroom, increased motivation, greater independence/flexibility, better social inclusion, awareness of Europe and cultural heritage. We see this project as benefiting the school in the long-term, along with the whole community in terms of social inclusion and European awareness.
