Project Summary
‘Welcome to Europe’ primary aims was to raise awareness and encourage volunteerism among young people with refugees in Europe. In the last years, because of the attacks produced in Europe, it has been detected a rejection of hosting refugees. According to one of the latest Eurobarometer, up to 67% of Hungarians and 61% of Bulgarians refuse refugees entering their countries. Change this mindset, especially young people, future opinion leaders, is basic to achieve a complete acceptance of refugees. Therefore, through this project we have worked with the following objectives:- Raise awareness of young Europeans and non-discrimination of refugees, through volunteering, the use of social networking and creativity. – Improve training of youth workers in order to provide them of skills and capacities to address the needs of a multicultural society: equality, diversity inclusion…The project includes training to improve competences of youth workers and guidelines to design a raise awareness campaign. On the other hand, specific aims were:- Promote the use of social networks as a tool to raise awareness and to avoid racism and xenophobia in European countries hosting refugees.- To develop the skills of youth workers to encourage volunteering with refugees in host countries.- To promote the participation of youth volunteerism by encouraging the inclusion of refugees already established in different European countries. The consortium was formed by the following countries: Bulgaria (Walktogether), Greece (Hellenic Youth Participation), Hungary (VYRE), Cyprus (YEU Cyprus) and Spain (Fundación Senara y Cooperación Internacional). ‘Welcome to Europe’ was developed during year 2017.
During the project the following activities were developed: an opinion survey was made to 550 young people and 65 young refugees to understand what they think about the conflict. There has been also two transnational meetings, one in the preparation phase and another in the evaluation phase; a training and best practices activity, in where youth workers received tools on how to create an awareness campaign and to promote volunteering. Later, these workers replicated this activity in their own countries. Finally, the winners of each country campaign were attended to a blended mobility activity in order to create an european campaign. This project was addressed to:- 10 youth workers. They have received a training session to understand the conflict and tools to create an awaraness campaign. They have also improved their attitudes to address the issue of refugees. – 20 young or youth workers in each country (100 total, from those 40 refugees) that received replication of the training session. In the last blended mobility activity, 16 young people and youth workers were involved to designed an awareness campaign at European level. The project results will continue to be disseminated among collaborating entities and young volunteers.
