Project Summary
Erasmus+ Scene Network (E+SN) faces one of today Europe’s greatest challenges: the refugee crisis, with one of Europe’s greatest assets: intercultural dialogue and social cohesion. E+SN is a European cultural project that uses theatre, education and creativity as a means of promoting the integration and participation of three target groups: Erasmus students, local students and local refugees, in the cultural and social life of their host city.
Born with the objective of creating a European Network around theatre, E+SN has become a research and dialogue tool exploiting the creative, educational and integrative possibilities offered by the relationship between the student mobility phenomenon and the refugee phenomenon.
For this purpose, it has created two main intellectual outputs available at the project website https://www.escnetwork.eu/ and the E+PRP aimed at (E+SN Handbook) standardizing and harmonizing all E+SN existing venues and guiding any potential interested University to become an E+SN office; and (E+SN Web APP) informing the general public about the Erasmus+ Scene Network activities taking place all over Europe as well as showing pictures and videos about the performances and theatre plays.
In particular, project activities have included:
– 3 partner meetings in Valencia (Spain) and Padua (Italy).
– 1 Multiplier event “Erasmus Scene Week” in Marburg (Germany) to show one of the main project results: the E+SN Handbook, where any University can find a detailed guide to set up a E+SN venue under a common standard and harmonized methodology. During the event, several information desks were placed all over the University campus, a press conference was organised at the University hall and a theatre workshop with local students was held.
– 1 Learning activity aimed at teaching and updating teachers their knowledge and application of the E+SN Handbook.
– 1 Learning activity to improve students’ theatrical abilities and performance techniques at the same time that the integration of local students, Erasmus students and local refugees/ migrants is promoted and their linguistic, communicative, artistic and expressive competencies are improved.
– 1 Multiplier Event “Erasmus Scene Festival” in Valencia (Spain) to present the 2nd main project result : the E+SN Web APP, where the student and University community and any interested party can be informed about the E+SN theatre programming, pictures and videos of the performances and plays, press releases, etc. The one-week festival has included: official receptions, theatre plays, integrative spaces in the city, awareness-raising actions and visibility events at the street and public spaces.
Project activities, processes and outputs have contributed to increase awareness about the difficult situation refugees and migrants are currently living, demonstrating how such diverse groups can work as a team and obtain excellent results. E+SN teaching methodologies and materials have increased the expertise and competencies of students, teachers and refugees/ migrants using theatre and drama as a vehicle towards integration and social inclusion.
The cooperation between partners coming from different countries and, thus, with different regional, demographical, economical and social backgrounds have allowed an effective exchange of good practices and the development of materials with common effective approaches. Both the E+SN Handbook and the E+SN APP are intended to suit any University wishing to join the European Network and any local and Erasmus student and refugee/ migrant wishing to improve their artistic and creative capacities while increasing their participation in social and cultural life.
A high level of participation from University and public bodies has ensured the expected impact: more than 200 active participants and more than 1000 people attending the activities; around 2.000 refugees informed and invited to participate in the project. More than 30 organisations have also actively participated in the project, coming from the three countries and working in the fields of culture, theatre, refugees, inclusion and education, including: University Community, Public Authorities, Culture and theatre organisations, Youth organisations, Refugee organisations, EU Network and institutions, etc.
Finally, thanks to the Erasmus+ Funding and the activities carried out with this support, the Erasmus+ Scene Network project has been awarded European Award for Cultural Heritage Promotion on the occasion of the 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage Label; the IV Dionisos Prize UNESCO Community of Madrid; the Best Young Talent in the Valencia Community 2018; and finalist of the PEARLE Prize in 2018.
