Project Summary
European citizenship and freedom of expression. What kind of Europe do we want?
European societies today have a number of difficult challenges to face: the percentage of electors voting is getting lower and lower, there is a growing lack of trust in politicians, hate crimes against ethnic and religious minorities are increasing, and the support for violent extremism is on the increase. These problems are threatening the legitimacy of democratic institutions themselves together with the peaceful coexistence of citizens.
Formal education offers us the right kind of tools and opportunities to begin to respond to these challenges. Educational practices and the provisions of school curricula can stimulate participation in the democratic process, help to reduce intolerance and prejudice, and contribute to diminishing the support for violent extremism. However, these goals can only be reached if we fully understand which democratic competencies need to be developed.
In order to do this, all those involved in this project should be able to:
• Develop their point of view through exchanges of ideas with others;
• Reflect on values and human rights that appear to be irreconcilable, and on the means to resolve these contradictions openly, with a sense of proportion and a willingness to adapt;
• Understand the point of view of others, even if there is disagreement between them;
• Engage dialogue on controversial questions instead of closing themselves within their own point of view and cultural perspective;
• Contextualise discussions of these problems in a wider historical, cultural and geographic framework.
The application and defence of formal values do not only belong to courtrooms, but also to the daily life of all of us.
The two partners, who appear to belong to different cultural contexts, do in fact share the same educational objectives. This partnership will create bridges between two countries central to the history of the Union to lead to dynamic and concrete action. On the basis of their specific cultural perspective and historical background, the students will be helped to work together to build up a collection of images referring to a common European heritage. The goal for all Europeans needs to be that of building a common identity, building a Europe for all in order that all might live together fully aware of the fact that difference is an asset and not an obstacle. This should ultimately lead to a common European citizenship upon which and thanks to which each citizen of Europe might build his future and that of the whole Union.
